Does anyone else use Readly?
I've had a subscription via Amazon for a very long time (as I had a 3 month trial via my Fire 10 tablet). I stopped buying physical magazines as they were all available from Readly's single subscription and every back issue of each magazine is available so if you want to look something up in an old issue they are all available, which is great. I've been using it for many years now.
But I've had some emails from them recently regarding some quite big changes.
First Readly is merging with a different service called Cafeyn who have bought them out. It wasn't one I'm familiar with, and it didn't seem to have much content when I looked. But Readly will retain its Nordic operations, so this will be for everywhere else.
I've now had another email today saying the Readly app on Amazon Kindle Fire devices has been discontinued and will no longer work. Great! I mainly bought a Fire tablet because they are great value compared to similar spec Android tablets, and mainly use Readly with it. Thankfully I have modded the tablet and sideloaded the Amazon Play store and app services on it, so I can install and run Android apps. But a lot of other Readly users won't be able to do this. They might have to access it via the browser. In hoping this if just because they are merging the 2 services and a new combined app will be launched soon. But there is no information on toff which isn't great when your are paying a monthly subscription for this service.
I also how the announcement that the 2 service are merging and will have a new app doesn't mean it will use the existing Cafeyn one as it was rubbish compared to Readly's UI which worked perfectly for reading magazines.
This disjointed mess reminds me of when Spotify suddenly ditched their mobile device support. I had been relying on that in my car to control Spotify whilst driving. But without warning they jussi removed it. My car didn't have a touchscreen to control Spotify at the tiny, just Bluetooth, so it had to be controlled on the phone. Without thy mobile node that wasn't easy. They stated they were working on a new system. It a very long time because they added a new mobile driving mode which honestly works well, but the transition left is with nothing for a very long time. I'm hoping Readly doesn't make the same mess of things.
