Has real hardware had its day?

Until fairly recently I would have said no way. You can never match the experience and feel of using a real Amiga, and that is still true.

But we now have emulated systems such as the A500 Mini, the A600GS, the A1200NG and the soon to be released The A1200.

A real Amiga needs to be maintained (recapped) and all hardware addons are now expensive, be them new or retro. It's an expensive hobby if you want to do more than just play games. The upcoming The A1200 is possibly capable of emulating at least an 060, so speed isn't an issue for all but some.

Personally I don't really use any of my real Amigas any more. I recently started to set them up one by one to test them and check they all worked. The floppy drive on an A500 no longer works so I will be changing that for a Gotek. And I will be using an A1200 to test floppy disks soon, but not really to use for more than that really. Most people these days just want a load of retro games in an easy to navigate list they can scroll through and select, and for that the emulated Amiga systems are ideal.

And that's why there is the Amiga Game Selector.

I don't have any Amigas or C64s anymore, don't have the space and time to invest, I barely even play retro games, would like to sometimes but then I still prefer to play new games.
