A lack of Star Trek games

    Any Star Trek fans?

    Retro Games

From the 1990s we saw loads of really good Star Trek games released. Thanks to the popularity of Next Generation, Voyager and DS9. Many of these games vanished and have not been offered digitally for a long time. Thankfully GOG have since updated compatibility and released about 8 of them again, but there are loads more that are still gone unless you own the original releases. And the few that were on Steam are just the original releases so don't have any patches or updates to make them work on newer versions of Windows.

GOG currently has a big Spring sale so I grabbed their updated versions of some of them.

    Armada 1 and 2
    Away Team
    Elite Forces 1 and 2

I do already own the physical copies of most Star Trek games but when they are on offer cheap digitally, and with the patches and updates already taken care of so they just work, I think it's worthwhile getting them again. Also means I can run them on my Steam Deck which is a good bonus.

    New Star Trek games

With the launch of the newer films some years ago I thought it would generate some new games, but we didn't see much. And then with the launch of the new series Discovery I really thought that would general a new interest in making some games. The the far better Strange New Worlds launched and this really lends itself to some great Adventure style games, RPGs or FPS.. but nothing. I really hope they don't make anything based on the horride new Academy series.

But we have finally had a couple of new game

Star Trek: Voyager ? Across the Unknown

I've only played the demo so far as I have other games to finish first, but it's pretty good RTS ship management game. But it's still based on Voyager, which seems a bit of an odd focus with all the newer series out, The game has been critised for being a bit linear, with your actions not really altering the outcome of events or the direction the story is going to take you. But I'm not that bothered about that as most Star Trek games are a bit like an interactive episode anyway and I've never minded that.

    Star Trek: Resurgence

This was released in 2024 and is a pretty good Adventure game. Very much like playing a Next Generation era series of episodes. I would say it's an interctive adventure over anything else but your choices to influence the story, I started playing it on the PS5 and really need to get back to it. It's very polished with some nice looking graphics and voice acting. And it has a really good story.

    Star Trek: Infinite

This was released in 2023 and is a 4x Strategy RTS, which is always good for a Star Trek setting. But I've not tried it yet because it has received a lot of very bad reviews. It's based on Stellaris and can be thought of as a standalone mod. I really like Stellaris so should like this, but the reviews keep putting me off, plus people comment that Star Trek mods for Stellaris are better than this. Have you tried it? Looks polished from the videos. I might try it one day if on offer.

    Star Trek Legends

This was ported from an Apple arcade game and you can see it. Very cartoon like caricatures of well known characters. Sold as an Action Adventure team based RPG. I've not bothered playing it, but it seems to follow the same generic mobile phone game where it becomes a collect the heroes game. Starting off with the lowest stat characters and trying to collect them all. Ther mobile original had a lot of micro transactions, as they all do, to progress. This has removed them all so if you want to play it the PC version is the best solution so you can just play it and not go bankrupt or are unable to progress because you can't afford a level up. It's not really interested me though.

    Prodigy: Supernova

There was also a game called Prodigy: Supernova based on the cartoon, but it looks like it's been removed from Steam. Graphics look faithful to the TV series. I tried to get into the TV series with my sin when it first came out but neither of us liked it much and I think the game relied on you being a fan of the series to enjoy with the same characters featured. A bit like the games based on other children's TV series. f.ex. I watched Trollhunters with my son so we both enjoyed playing the game, but if you hadn't watched the series the game wouldn't have meant much. Not sure why the Prodigy game has been deleted though.

Anything else coming out in the future?

There is a VR game called Infection that looks interesting from the trailer. The graphics look quite basic though, No release date yet.

Do you know of any more upcoming Star Trek games?

If you haven't played a classic game in years, it's never too late to start!

Not really, never have been, watched the old series sometimes when I was a kid.

Although I watched the first movie of that reboot trilogy (is it a trilogy), and I was quite impressed. Still have to watch the 2 others, Into Darkness and Beyond. Don't ask me what it is about though, I just watch them as normal sci-fi movies, not Star Trek movies.

And as a kid a I was huge Star Wars fan, not anymore since 1990 probably, and what I think is annoying at the moment, is that they are just milking the product, making spin offs and series of everything, I don't like that, and I don't watch it. Same when they started jumping on that Marvel and DC comic train, when does it stop? I basically watch them because they are so well done.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about movies in the beginnig

What about Star Trek: Bridge Crew.
