Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl - True Meaning

I have always been a big fan of Tori Amos, as her music is very similar to Kate Bush, who is my favouite artist. Both write very complex songs that explore far more philosophical subjects than are ever understood by the mainstream airhead singers.

But have you always listened to some songs without really knowing their meaning, just because you like the song?

Her song, Cornflake Girl, is a good example. It was her breakout song that got her noticed by a wider audience in the charts. But did many who listened to it every really know what it was about? Talking about a Cornflake girl and Raisin girl. It's meaning is far darker than most realise. It's about the trust lost between different women. BUt even more controversial at the time it was referencing village or tribe life in third world countries where FGM is still practiced. The raisin girl being the trusted friend who would protect you, whereas the cornflake girl who broke your trust and let it happen. Meaning that is sadly lost on most, but maybe wouldn't have been the chart hit had the lyrics been blatant.

Are there any songs you only discovered the real meaning of latter? Or songs you still listen to that you still don't know what they are going on about?

I still don't understand what the song "No Limits" by 2Unlimited is all about.

Not exactly thought provoking lyrics! Good eye candy on TOTP though!

If we are gong down that route, I hated this style of music, but the song Feel it - by The Tamperer featuring Maya ‧ 1998, and the lyrics "What's she gonna look like with a chimney on her?"

I had no idea what that meant. Just Googled it and apparently it's slang for a black eye. Slang from where? Reading the song lyrics it can be summed up as she found her man in bed with another women so smacked her in the eye. Again though provoking!
