Who are you getting full fibre with? Obviously faster than openreach.

EE are offering 1.6 through BT/Openreach/Wholesale.... In fact, this is upping to 1.8G sometime real soon with concerns that 2.5G platform will not have the bandwidth, let alone the future plans of 10G

EE will front all the sales for BT from here on....

1.8G would mean downloading the Windows Pro 11 ISO image in around 30 seconds & 30GB movie files in around 2.5 minutes.

Wowzers, those expected values are fast speeds.

I'm currently on a 100 meg plan (FTTP) and I don't think we even really take full advantage of this, to be honest. I was tempted to downgrade to a slower and cheaper plan, although simply haven't bothered.

In my days of torrenting, which are far behind me now, I would have been amazed.

    Wowzers & then some J T....

Me too RE Torrent downloads, but then lack of seeds always plays a big part on speed. - On the odd occasion, I've seen one seed banging me 5.5Mb/Sec with no others available & thought....

Holy cr4p..... What upload speed has this guy got!?

    @ DC

You're doing around 100/50 on your connection which is a big help to not having such a cr4p service via "Contention Ratio".

I might be paying £70 for the speed I showed above, but with method in madness, I'm hoping they won't use any bandwidth up for other punters....

That said, my good friend in Holbury has 900 down & 900 up.... Zero contention....

Zero contention means "The Best" & as slick as you like.

AFAIK there is no contention with full fibre and no bandwidth throttled at certain times or certain types of data. At least BT have always clearly stated they don't for the whole time I've been with them, and based on my own use for the last years I've never had any obvious bandwidth issues. Only thing I need to do sometimes is reboot the Halo router as it sometimes doesn't seem to be full speed and a reboot does restore it. Happens about once every 2 months. It also drops the fibre connection sometimes at about 3am for maintenance. Only lasts about 5 minutes when it happens. I've noticed this a couple of times when I've been up really late. Bit annoying but not a huge issue.

As for using the bandwidth. You will find suddenly with such a fast connection it takes a bit of getting used to. It's a real game changer. I remember thinking of all the things I could download. A short time later is all downloaded and you are then winding what to download next. For the first time you don't have to plan downloads.

But you will also discover that most connections cannot provide dowloads as fast as your bandwidth, with the renote servers being the bottleneck. The only service that does always provide full bandwidth is Steam. Watching that downloading at over 125MB/s is amazing to watch. 1GB in 10 seconds. It really is a game changer. A 60GB game downloading in just over 8 minutes is hard to comprehend.

Playstation for some reason never quite manages to hit the full bandwidth. My PS4 tends to give asserting 40-60MB/s and my PS5 faster at between 80-100MB/s. Still more than fast enough.

Another that does go full speed is Usenet, but I expect it depths on the provider you use. I use NewsDemon and that downloads at maximum speed.

Torrents are understandably reliant on how many are currently sharing. More commerical legit torrents go full speed, but something a bit more obscure is reliant on a few sharing.

One of the slowest can be Microsoft Store. When it's doing some Windows app updates it can be really slow at downloading. Not sure why, just does.

Obviously you will only get the maximum speeds via Ethernet. When I'm using wifi I don't get anywhere near the full bandwidth when I test it. My Samsung phone gets adding 400mbps in most places and a bit faster when really close to the router. My tablet only manages about 200. That's down to a number of factors including hardware in each device. Not many devices support newer protocols.

I had a quick look and couldn't find any mention of Openreach offering such speed. For my postcode it still shows my current connection is the best I can get, which is 980mbps down and 110mbps up.
