I've been considering adding 2.5Gb to my network as I fully wired up my house with Cat6 so it will support it. Especially now you can get much faster devices on local networks now that could take advantage of faster data transfer. Especially when working on video or 3D projects and need to move files to free up space or back up. I think 10Gb is a bit too expensive at the moment.
Yeah...the 10G is plugged in but only on Gigabit home network.

A good friend of mine has 10G around his household, but the monthly running costs for the Switches is stupid money per month. He thought his Electricity meter was going to melt!
He just turns it on when he backs up once a month!

Every household should have a Fibre network ffs......

Why are the 10Gb switches using so much power?

You can actually run 10Gb through Cat6 as it is rated up to that speed. But I suspect length of cable would be an issue. 2.6Gb is fine as I've tested that between 2 systems.

Jon went & bought commercial U rack affairs because they were cheaper at the time.

Like I said though, we should all be able to afford Fibre around the house these days, but as yet, no one has come up with a viable idea/money screw to f'k us all for the privilege.

I was considering looking into fibre just to see how viable it would be. The wires are so much thinner, but you have to have special equipment to bond them etc. But the old Cat wires are so easy to cut and add connectors to with a crimper and cheap too. Plus switches are so cheap these days, my favourite being Zyxel. Will probably wait until more then just PC motherboards support more then Gb Ethernet.

Are you using WiFi6? I've heard issues about it, such as distance and walls.

Now that you mention it, my new Fritzbox 7590AX has WiFi6 and the connection seems to be less good than with my old Fritzbox. I don't reach anymore 6 out of 6 lights on my repeater, only 5 and sometimes I have to restart it.

Although running a speed test gives me excellent speeds.

I don't use Wifi at all for any fixed place hardware. I try to have it all connected via Ethernet. Just more consistent speeds at maximum bandwidth. Plus far less latency. I've never encountered Wifi managing full speed, even when right next to the access point.

The only devices I use wifi are security cameras, door bells, Echos, smart speakers, phones, tablets and printers etc. Things that don't need much bandwidth and even a poor signal is enogh.

I've also noticed an annoying behaviour with Wifi. This only became apparent when I upgrade to Gigabit fibre. My Smartphone f.ex. will sometimes be connected far slower then it should be. A test and the download is only 60mbps. Switching wifi off and on again on the Smartphone and retesting and it's at over 400mbps. I just checked and its actually reporting it's connected at 740mbps at the moment. I think it might randomly sometimes connect at 2.4 and not 5Ghz. Apparently my phone does also support Wifi6.

Playstations have also never been great using wifi either. Download speeds were never great over wifi on PS3, PS4 or PS5. But both my PS4 and 5 over ethernet download at over 100MB/s which is great.
