I'm too young to die - Bitmap books

I'm too young to die - The ultimate guide to first-person shooters 1992-2002

    20221122_112828.jpg

The latest book from Bitmap Books arrived this week. A detailed history of First-Person shooters. It features interviews with key designers responsible for the genre, as well as details on every key game across all syatems.

As usual is a very nicely made book packed with information.

I saw this one but didn't order it because I'm not too much into FPS, besides the last few years I like kinda few of them. But according to the pictures it looks very nice.

It is very nice. I'm not a huge fan of multiplayer FPS myself, but there have been a lot of single player FPS that I've really enjoyed. Half-Life 2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein are still two of my all time favourite games.

What I like about this book is the interviews that go into detail about have certain games were created and developed, giving more insight rather than just listing the games.

That looks like the sort of book I'd really enjoy flicking through, but less so to actually own

It's definitely what you would call a coffee table book.

Although it does have at least a page of text on each game featured, and multiple pages devoted to each interview, so lots to read. I tend to dip into these books and read something specific. Or use them for reference.

These are also great to go back and discover games you never got around to playing and forgot about. And I use all the other Bitmap Books the same. Great when loading up an emulator. Can grab the book for that system and find something I've wanted to play. Otherwise I often have the issue with emulator frontends that I end up spending ages scrolling through games and never actually playing anything.

There was a lot of Goldeneye content online a little while ago, interviews and stuff, which I really enjoyed reading. I'd like to read about that for some of the really seminal games (Doom, Goldeneye obv, Quake, Halo). Not sure I care for all shooters equally but some of these iconic ones are interesting for sure.
