    A new PC is needed; stat!

    Hi all,

    A loooong time no see from me! I have been unfortunately sucked in by the real world (and fortunately/unfortunately) spat back out again.

    Anywho, it's time I build a new PC. I am currently using a laptop as my time (and desire) to do any gaming died for a fair while. Too many things happened that stole my focus, but now life is (kinda) settled now.

    A friend of mine at work built me a parts list, would be great to know what you guys think!

    • Deepcool - Tesseract SW ATX Mid Tower Case
    • Corsair - CXM 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
    • MSI - Z370-A PRO ATX LGA1151
    • Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8 GHz 6-core
    • Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
    • Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8 GB DDR4-3000
    • Samsung 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" SSD
    • Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB WINDFORCE OC 6G
    • Asus - DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

    Thoughts?

    I got an Intel 8500 processor a few months ago and have been happy with it. I should try and do some benchmarks some time. If memory serves, the 8400 isn't much different.

    I've also been very pleased with my Samsung Evo SSD.

    Have you got a good monitor? Using some pony old monitor would be awful, for me, these days

    My monitor is average, but at this point, so is my laptop (2nd one; using the one I bought for my wife for Uni...). The biggest issue I have right now:

    * Not enough RAM
    * Terrible graphics card
    * My mobo is probably rubbish too

    So a new PC it is!

    Some older monitors are good. Probably the more high end ones though. Some of the older cheaper ones can be a bit rubbish.

    I get the impression that even the cheap ones nowadays are pretty good.

    Ok spec. Decent make PSU and ram. A 1060 will run anything in 1080p, but might struggle with higher resolutions in newer games.

    Regarding motherboard, I already buy Asus over anything else, based on reliability over the years in my own systems and others I've built. Used to use MSI until I had a few fail. Although I do currently have an MSI gpu.

    Regarding the CPU, I'm a big Intel fan and thr i5s are great, but it's worth looking at the current AMD range as the recent new generation are very good for gaming and cheaper than Intel.

    If you haven't played a classic game in years, it's never too late to start!

    A lot of people suggested AMD Ryzen to me. In fact, a few people I speak to on IRC were surprised that I bothered with Intel. I was very tempted to go with Ryzen, but I went with Intel in the end as I decided to get a Shuttle barebones machine, which currently only support Intel.

    I did eventually get around to getting a new PC; scored a retired CAD machine from work for $300. Had 32GB of RAM, a 250GB SSD, average graphics card (which has been replaced with another second hand card!). Runs solid as a brick, but no good for super new games, but for what I'm playing (and working from home), it works a treat.

    Monitor wise, I had a 32" TV not in use...I don't know how I'm going to back to small monitors in the office...

    I'd rather die than lose my two nice big monitors at work
