Should I build a new PC?

I've been wondering if I ought to try and build a new PC.

There isn't anything wrong with my current system, but I wouldn't mind future-proofing myself a little.

What sort of hardware tends to be good these days?

The Intel Core i5 seems rather tempting, but it looks like AMD have some decent offerings as well. Not sure what might be a good choice graphics card wise. I know the Intel graphics are supposedly well supported under Linux, but I gather they are still quite far behind the ATI and nvidia stuff.

How would one decide what chipset to go with?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

As you are not really a gamer then an Intel i5 with built in GPU would be fine. And I always recommend Asus motherboards purely for reliability and features. Get a micro atx board with dvi/HDMI built in to support the built in GPU and you are good to go.

I think it's a bit early to buy the new AMD cpus yet to ensure full compatibility with every os etc. Intel are generally the best bet.

I considered buying a new PC, as mine is now already 7 years old, yes time passes, and as I'm lately doing a lot of extracting, archiving and that kind of stuff, mine is quite slow when you run multiple tasks. I f.ex. just extracted all of my PS2 RPGs from .rar files, then extracted these .rar files, and finally archived the .iso with .7z again, took forever. You can run multiple tasks, but it's damn slow.

So here's what I came up with. But of course if you don't need it that powerful, just downgrade every component by 2-3 steps, and you should be fine.

    - CPU: Intel i7-7700K "Kaby Lake"
    - Mainboard: Asus Prime Z270-A (ATX, Socket 1151)
    - RAM: G.Skill 32GB (2x16) DDR4-3200 Ripjaws V
    - GPU: Asus GeForce GTX1060 Turbo (6GB DDR5)
    - CPU Cooling: be quiet! Dark Rock 3
    - HDD: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB
    - PSU: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 550W
    - Tower: be quiet! Silent Base 800 ATX
    - Sound: Soundblaster Z

Stone the crows, Steve, a.... new PC?

But yes, if you've got the funds, and fancy it.

However, there will always be something faster/cheaper/better on the horizon - so if your current machine is satisfactory is it really worth it? You could wait a bit longer. Only you can really decide this.

As we know Steve, he probably still has a Pentium 2, so it could indeed be time to change.

An Athlon 64 would be a great upgrade then! ;-)

I did recently acquire a nice Pentium II machine. I'm yet to make a topic about it, but it does run Windows 98 nicely .

The first new pc I built in 1998 was a PII 400Hz running Win98. Great machine at the time. And it was mind blowing moving on from my Amiga A4000 with 25MHz 030 and 16MB ram, to something with 400MHz and 256MB ram. Obviously being a pc all that extra power didn't quite translate in the same way it would had it been an Amiga!

Mate I'm still waiting to upgrade my AMD 64x2 PC. Pretty much any piece of crap I could buy nowadays would run rings around it, but I just can't bring myself to buy from the really 'low end' even if technically it would be better than what I have now.

To be fair though, my PC has been unplugged for probably over 20 months.

I use my work laptop (an MBP), which is a far more recent spec, if I need to do anything significant. I have a PC laptop somewhere in the house, or maybe the garage. I'm not really sure where it is to be honest
