    UltimatePPC: Accelerator for Amiga 3000/4000

    Hi guys,

Seems like a new accelerator is on its way for the lucky owners of Amiga 3000 and Amiga 4000 computers:

Someone mentioned this on Amibay yesterday. Is brilliant news that such a project is in development as PPC accelerators for very hard to find these days, and very expensive when they do appear. Plus their age is making them less and less reliable.

I'm hoping the price won't be really high though.

Rather cynical about it imo & why oh why an 040?

Its hotter, uses more energy, is less compatible than 060 & slower than 060. They are throwing USB, Ethernet & 2D VGA at the card and whilst it's nice to see some new hardware for out of date computers such as the Amiga, with the price difference in 68xxx chips these days & the modern extras designed in, I can not understand the choice of 040??

This decision amounts to similar & fatal mistakes C= made in their entire History as a Company whilst it designed it's own demise.

Maybe they have a good source of 040s and not 060s?

With regards to the 68040 vs 68060, it wouldn't surprise me if price is a big factor.

At Farnell, a 68040 is about £200 whilst the 68060 is twice that at about £400.

And there lies the quandry. £400 for approx 75 Mips @ 50Mhz. You can buy an i7 2600K CPU for about £240 retail & that gives you 128,300 MIPS before you even overclock it....

Sod Farnells & go to China.

I hope they at least manufacture the board in a manner that will allow easy upgrade to 060. Get a Regulator on there that just needs a Resistor moving, such as the CSMKIII & CSPPC cards are.

Cheap fabrication in China would be a brilliant solution. Make a new run of 060's and PPCs and flood the retro scene with cheap accelerators.

Just don't expect the same quality, or that they will still be working in 20 years!

Once again, in the end, price will be the most important.
Does anyone would like to extimate the price? More then 350 euros? Much more?

I'm betting over £300 for sure. Probably closer to £500 wouldn't surprise me, but would mean it would price it out of most retro hobbyist's pockets and only those already hoarding existing PPC boards would end up grabbing them all.
