some more important facts about battery leak

We talked about battery leak some time ago, i put a post about my A501 ram expantion.

Some people told me to treat the PCB with lemon juice, and that's correct, but,
yesterday i start thinking a bit about it, because a lot of people say "the battery had a leak, and there is acid in my card" .... acid? and we put lemon juice?????? No, the question is there are Alkanile batteries and Acid Batetries.

Alkanile batteries leak (amiga) you work with lemon juice or vinager to neutralize the alkaline base
Acid Batetries leak you work with Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) to neutralize the acid base

correct this info if i am wrong... but i think it is like this.

So, if you ever have a battery leak, first check what type it is !!!

That is a very good point, because a lot of people don't realise that you can have Alkaline or Acid batteries.

You can also clean up any battery leak with Isopropyl alcohol, or Carburetor cleaner as a substitute, which is what I use.

Isn't carb cleaner quite nasty stuff though? I'm happy splashing a bit of isoprop around, but not so much breathing in other fumes.

Also, is the lemon juice to neutralise, or to try and dissolve away some of the gunk?

    Both,
Lemon Juice is to eliminate the alcaline base of the leak, and also for corrotion, it separates the iron/metal from the oxigen.

Carb cleaner (normally Toluene) and Isopropyl alcohol are about as toxic as each other. They are both used in a similar way as a solvent, with a very fast evaporation rate, leaving no residue. Both are bi-products of crude oil and not recommended to inhale in a closed environment, or get onto your skin.

Toluene is WAY nastier than isoprop. You can drink diluted isoprop (I wouldn't recommend it, mind), and splash it about relatively merrily as long as you aren't using particularly large volumes.

True, as it is a mixture of Water and propene. But Toluene will do a better job of cleaning things in my experience. I normally use it to clean old thermal compound off of CPUs and heatsinks and it works very nicely. A lot of solvents can be quite bad, if not used safely. I normally use it outside sat at the garden table, and use cotton buds dipped in the carb cleaner. Works well and evaporates quickly leaving no residue.
