    PS3 finally hacked!

Someone has finally hacked the PS3! It has taken them a very long time, but they have finally managed to hack into the PS3 to gain full memory, CPU and HDD access.

You can read more on their blog at http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/2010/0...im-geohot.html

It's still early days but a promising start. Homebrew and emulation on the PS3 could be with us soon.

I read that yesterday, it was George Hotz, who also already cracked the iPhone when he was 17. He needed 5 weeks to hack the PS3. But to be honest, do you really need homebrew and emulators for the PS3? There's so many platforms which run emulation perfectly already, and I'm still the one who prefers emulation on the PC, or on handhelds.

You know I read that yesterday as well and I must be confused as I thought I had already seen hacks allowing you to run Linux on PS3's... Doesn't that count? (What am I missing here?)

Running Linux on PS3 isn't a hack, it's a feature. At least of the old model, I think the new slim model can't do it. It was pretty pointless anyway as the Linux install couldn't access and utilise much of the hardware so ended up being very slow and cumbersome. A hack could fix that of course.

The obvious end goal is running disc backups. i.e. games on BR discs. Something that has been impossible to date. Having hacked in and gained access to the core hardware of the PS3, homebrew hackers can now find exploits to boot and run game backups.

The exploit he found is still useless and the root key is implemented into the hardware, so it cannot been read via software. There's even no "Hello world" existing yet.

True, but it is much further than anyone else has managed so far. The PS3 is definitely proving a hard nut to crack. Look how quickly the Wii was hacked and soft modded for example, or even the Xbox 360. The PS3 is fending off all so far and succeeding. The first time I think any system has managed this long.
