Clones that were better than the originals

Sorry if this has come up before. So... Katakis better than R-Type? Maybe. Garrison II better than Gauntlet II? Maybe not! Dogs of War was definitely better than Ikari Warriors.

There must be so many others but 'Britain's Got Talent is on TV' and my mind has gone blank! Over to you...

I know there have been a lot, but my mind is also blank at the moment. I will see if I can remember some and post them later.

    Yeah

I also liked Dogs of War, was faster paced than the very slow Ikari Warriors.

How about Doom clones? Some of the Amiga games based on Doom were more interesting to play than Doom, which itself got very repetitive after a few levels. Breathless and Alien Breed 3D 2 especially. Although you did need a powerful Amiga to run them well.

Or what about the Breakout clone, Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh. That was one of my favourite games on the ST and Amiga. Played that for a long time. I know technically Arkanoid was a port of an Arcade game, but it was still a clone of Breakout. Unless you class Breakout as a Genre.

    Katakis better than R-Type ?

Katakis, R-type and SWIV were the best, what you call in UK? shoot'em up? games.

SWIV was fantastic, the all game without loading levels, great graphics, just love that game.

Katakis for me was a bit better then R-type, but they were both great games,
R-Type intro music will be in my heart for the rest of my life!!

The Amiga version of R-Type isn't as good as the Arcade original though.
