It all depends what you are drinking, but in general it is lower than that. Most lagers and beers are around 4% in the UK I think. Real Ales and local Cider can be much higher. The Cider's sold at my local pubs is around 7.8%.
Not so true these days.
Most bottled lagers in pubs tend to be 5%.
A lot of the draft lagers are now also 5%

More pubs are stocking Belgium beers these days which are stronger.
Common ones are Leffe Blonde and Duvel, 6.6% and 8.5%
