Which updates do you mean? Game or system OS? For the system it overwrites the OS files with the latest downloads as it installs them, however I don't know if it then keeps the install packages. I'm also sure that once a game installer or updater unpacks and installs itself it is gone.

Yes, I was speaking about system updates. Those for games you can easily delete them.
That's great point you stated here Dave. We aren't 100% sure if the finished installer (after unpacking) is being deleted also (or more accurately, the packed file itself).
DemonCleaner might be able to help you more with this as he is using a cracked PS3 so has full access to the HDD file structure and can take a look.
