View Full Version : Favourite Amiga adventure?

If you had to select a single Adventure game out of all for the Amiga, which single title would you pick? and why?

For me it is Future Wars. Secret of Monkey Island may be a better title overall and MI2 even more so, but Future Wars was one of the first graphical adventures I really got into and couldn't put down until I completed it.

A close second for me was Lure of the Temptress. It may look a little bland graphically by today's standards, but it was a game I remember waiting for the release of and was not disappointed. It was the first to experiment with realtime events in game, where characters went about their daily lives and you had to time visits and events to specific times of the day in the game. The game also had a great story with many twists and a lot of puzzle solving.

That is a tough one. I also liked Future Wars, although I did never finish the game. To nominate a favorite one is quite impossible. I can only speak for those I've played, and have to say that probably my favorite one was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

I also enjoyed the second instalment of Leisure Suit Larry, it was quite funny to play, unfortunately the game died when trying to read on the 3rd and last disk, pure amiga fun :( I never got a working copy (The amiga had no @torrent ;))

That was definitely one of the worst moments in the Amiga days, when you were playing a game, swapped disks and received a read error or the insert disk text would just remain on the screen forever :( I remember such occasions well. It was much worse when the games were originals, as you couldn't just get another copy from a friend.

Or when a friend copied a game for you, but one of the disks didn't work. Almost as annoying as getting the game to work but then never working out the controls!

I have to go with Monkey Island. That game was one of the first of that kind of game that I played and I absolutely loved it. Even to this day it's still entertaining and can present a decent challenge if you haven't played it for a while.

For me Lure of the temptress WAS my favourite, mainly because it was the only adventure game I managed to play through without using a solution guide. As much as the monkey island games were great, I was left scratching my head without any walkthroughs, same with the excellent Legend Of Kyrandia and even Revolution Software's Beneath A Steel Sky I found to be harder than their Lure of the temptress debut.

EoB by far...that was the sh1t....I finished EoB I, but man did it take me ages...thank god I had it saved on the HD....

EoB? As in Eye of the Beholder? If so, that's an RPG, not an adventure. Still a great game though.

Beneath A Steel Sky. It's the only one I ever played at that point! But I did like the funny dialog between the two main characters, "You've turned me into a vacuum cleaner!" as an example. And I have always enjoyed games with plenty of story.

Beneath a steel sky was one of the games that stopped working half way through, which was again annoying. I hated this during amiga times, but then of course, I could have simple just bought the original  Thus I never finished the game.

Harrison

Beneath a Steel Sky was a great game. Shame you never got to finish it.

That definitely was annoying when a cracked game broke halfway through.

One game that did that to me was Nitro. I used to play that in 3 player mode with some friends, and sadly we all had copies from the same source. After a few levels the graphic blocks that made up the levels would loads in all the wrong places. It was funny trying to drive around the messed up courses though.

I tried Monkey Island and I remember the funny start to the game. It dont normaly play them as I tend to favour more action oriented games, but I love the humour.:)

Bingo!

Monkey Island is a special game, funny, clever, a challenge, incredibly entertaining.

The Secret of Monkey Island is a great game, no doubt about that. I spent countless hours trying to complete the game many years ago. Still, there are so many excellent adventure games for the Amiga. We have titles such as Zak McKracken, The Flight of the Amazon Queen, Maniac Mansion, and so on. It's therefore very hard to choose just one title. Still, good old Monkey Island is something special, so I guess I'll go for this one like several others of you.

Another vote here for Monkey Island.

I guess I would also have to vote for Monkey Island. The humour, especially in the duelling, was first class, but the main thing was that it just looked great, sounded great and was easy to get into, yet hard to complete.

Another of my favourites was Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Great graphics, great sound and an excellent storyline.

Oh, and this is my 50th post... YAY!!!

I seem to remember getting Operation Stealth free with a magazine, or it could of come free with a mouse. The magazine might of included a full walk through in the same issue, as I used it solidly to progress though the game.

Although I've never played adventurer games prior or afterwards, I considered it a pretty good point and click adventurer. I never did complete it, as the end stages required timing.

I'll stray from the norm here and mention Space Quest instead (even though I absolutely loved Monkey Island too). It's been a VERY long time since I last played it, but I remember playing the game together with my brother (at a time when our grasp of English was still tenuous, to say the least!), and having an absolute blast. Undoubtedly, a lot of the humour, the parodies and subtle references to other games/movies were lost to us, but man ... it was top notch fun. Felt like a real achievement too, when we finally completed the sucker :)

I loved Lure of the Temptress too, which has been mentioned a few times in this thread, but the game glitched prior to entering the castle part, and I never got to see the end.

Hello all,

I have question for you all, do you feel that Monkey Island 3 and 4 were good sequels to Monkey Island 1 and 2?

Myself, well I did enjoy Monkey Island 3 very much, I was really looking out for a sequel so that helped in its favour.
And while it was good I did feel something was missing, though the cartoon graphics were great.

Monkey Island 4, I have to be honest, I don't like this game so much as I like its predecessors.
While it wasn't graphically ugly I would have preferred a more tradional mouse and click instead of the somewhat 'actiony' direct control we got now.
Also, the story wasn't as well developed and felt very forced IMO.

I actually never finished this game as I got tired of it during the Monkey Combat part.

While I like the ending in MI3 I do hope Ron Gilbert will one day make his own Monkey Island 3, and FINALLY reveal what the secret of Monkey Island now exactly is.

That's an interesting question. Personally I was sceptic to Monkey Island 3 when it was released. The reason was that it was so graphically different to the former games. Beside this, the interface was brand new as well. However, after spending some time playing the game (many years later), I found that I enjoyed it a lot. Lot's of good humour and plenty of puzzles to sort out. Still, I think they (the developers) should have stuck more to the old recipe of Monkey Island 1 & 2.

Anyway, I think Monkey Island 3 is a good sequel and an entertaining game.

As for Monkey Island 4 though.. Well, I tried it once and I was very disappointed. I didn't like the controls, the graphics, or the overall atmosphere. Managed to play for about 15 minutes, then I gave up.

It was similar for me too with MI3. I played it quickly on release but then didn't continue. I later came back to the game and really enjoyed it. I think that when it was released I had just played through MI 1 and 2 and the third was slightly too different for me to get into at the time, but now, as PG said, it is a good sequel, enjoyable, entertaining and in the spirit of the series.

Also in a similar way I've not played MI4 that much. I installed it when I bought he game, had a quick play with the game but then haven't played it since. I should really give it another go now as it's the only one I've not played through and completed. It is quite a departure from the previous games in the series though.

Hello P G and Harrison,

I was interested to see what the state of the Monkey Island fan community was and what their reaction was to Monkey Island 3 and 4.
Its nice to see that like a lot of other Lucasart franchise fans it is still a very lively place despite the years.

Monkey Island 3 seems to be well accepted but like you two, Monkey Island 4 is a little less well received, probably due to the gameplay and the atmosphere.
Someone on Mobygames said that Monkey Island 4 had become the victim of what it made fun of; commercialism.
I have to agree on that one.

The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island: LeChuck's Revenge are pretty much timeless, and Monkey Island 3 might also grow into that status, but Monkey Island 4 really feels like an unnecessary expansion to the series.

This often happens with any series or franchise, be it books, films or games.

The popularity of the first few make the creator/developer/publisher want to continue on with another sequel. Sadly this often ends up with the last sequel in a series being a victim of the series own success.

When creating the story for most things the creator has a roadmap outlining where they want the story to go, and as a series evolves the fans get more into the characters, storylines and mythology. But often a forced sequel due to success will have to be written after the end of the creator's original story outlines and roadmap, and will then be in danger of changing something fundamental that will ruin the series for dedicated fans.

For me one of the worst at doing this was the fifth book in the Douglas Adam's Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy "trilogy". The fourth book ended nicely and wrapped everything up, and another book wasn't needed... but it was still written and in my view altered the ideas of the original 4 books too much with a very negative ending.

Hello Harrison,

I heard the same happened with the Rama series, as a result I only got Rendezvous with Rama, and as it was fun to read I don't want to spoil the experience.

In Monkey Island's case, perhaps they should have put the series to rest after Monkey Island 3, Guybrush and Elaine finally got together, LeChuck was defeated and the newly wedded couple fared into the evening sun.

MI3 was great, MI4 sucked ass.

At the time, Simon the Sorceror (AGA) was my fav'. It came out at Christmas - arrived from DataGem during the Christmas hols after waiting 3 long months - and it had such gorgeous lovely snow-scene graphics, and it was funny, and it had some good puzzles. I've played it a few times...and even editted some of the conversations as the text is stored as plain text in the game files.

Hook had a good atmosphere, enjoyed that one.

I played the Beneath A Steel Sky demo to death, but only got around to playing the game a few years ago when it got released as freeware. Massively disappointed. Why was the dead body of Anita found piled in a closet under the garden shed? Lord knows.

CodeName Hell Squad was good, played that on the emu.

Blasphemy, blasphemy, kill in the infidel!

Heh, I read in one of my old PC mags that the talky version had one of the actors of Red Dwarf.
Also, wasn't Simon the Sorcerer not developed by the same people who also made the Elvia 1 and 2 RPG FP games and Waxworks?

Hello burns flipper,

Why was the dead body of Anita found piled in a closet under the garden shed? Lord knows.

CodeName Hell Squad was good, played that on the emu.

You mean her body in the locker of the radiation suits right?
I guess Lamb wanted to hide her body, she might not have any status but the fact that people can die near the reactor of radiation poisoning isn't good advertisement.

Still need to CodeName Hell Squad, Wasted Dreams and Napalm also.

In German? You need to play it again in English as the voice acting was by Chris Barrie (Rimmer from Red Dwarf). I can't imagine other language versions doing his acting justice.

Yes, there was never any explanation - one minute she's walking around at work, next she's dead and hidden in a locker.

Still need to CodeName Hell Squad, Wasted Dreams. Both very good games, lots of fun. I played both about a year or two ago, to completion.

Saw this thread and just had to pipe up ! It was Simon the Sorceror for me. Played Future Wars but got stuck on an anoying bit with Monks walking in a square, never did get passed that point, good game though. Also liked a game called Innocent Until Caught, although it got panned at the time !

I have a great story about Innocent Until Caught. I had a friend, he was a bit weird, and he wanted to borrow it so I went round at 10 one Sunday morning with it. He wanted to play it straightaway, so I put it on and started playing, and when I handed him the mouse, he wanted me to do it. He liked to watch.

So I spent the entire day playing the game in front of him, since I'd already completed it myself, and finished at 9pm. He then made me watch the concert video I'd brought round, and it was 10 pm before I was able to escape.

That was a whole 12 HOURS OF WEIRDNESS.

@Zoolbaby

I remember the place with the monks walking in a square, when they saw you, they followed you and the game was over. And there are some places where you are stuck and can't get an item, because you're not standing on the exact spot, which could be 1 pixel, very annoying. If you want to see the end, you can have a look at the screenshots at the main page here (http://www.classicamiga.com/content/view/1855/96/).

And btw, Simon the Sorceror is awesome, I still prefer it to MI

I loved all Delphine Software's adventure games. Future Wars (very tough dude!), Operation Stealth and my love Cruise for a Corpse.

Don't forget Infocom, Magnetic Scrolls and Level 9. My favourite text/graphic adventures are there. What else?

LucasArts had nice moments too (Monkey Island and Indy series), and the most prototype adventure of all time, imho, Loom (very short though, I finished it in one afternoon back then).

Sierra had nice adventures too, my best serie is Police Quest though.:)

Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis. Excellent x 3! I played this on A500 back in '93. It had like 12 disks! I remember playing 90% to the end and the last disk had an error. How disapointing! Eventaually found pc version some years after just so I could see the end. There's even 3 possible endings to the game depending what choices you make - similar but different to Monkey Island.
