What Amiga games would you like to see remade today on a current system? Which current system would you like to see them released on and why?

For me many Amiga games should never be remade as the original versions are perfect as they are and any updates to the graphics or control system would ruin the balance of the game or how it originally felt and played. But there are definitely many Amiga games that would equally lend themselves well to a remake or sequel.

For me the biggest game I am still hoping to see a sequel that is more closely a remake than a true sequel is Frontier: Elite 2. Yes, there was a kind of sequel on the PC just after Frontier, but it wasn't all that different and most didn't think it was as good. Imagine how a true remake of Frontier could be created with current PC technology. They keep saying it is in the planning stages of a sequel, but that has been stated for many years now. I just hope that if they do eventually create a new Elite, that it will stick closely to the style and game play ideas of Frontier, but expand on them much more, giving the ability to leave your ship and roam space stations and planets, as well as some form of true interaction with in game characters.

Another game I would love to see a remake of is ShadowWorlds. I loved that game and the way it used dynamic lighting throughout the game. A remake of that would be great. It would probably lend itself to a hi-def console release more than a PC release though.

Hm, are you sure, a remake of Elite, as I find Elite also good as it is. And the latest releases of space sims are very good. Sure, I admit, if they manage to preserve the same feeling you had in the original, than yes, but if they begin to expand, they could also ruin it in many ways.

It has just been announced that Stardust is getting a remake for the PS3. It shall be entitled Superstardust HD.

However I have known this for a while. I hate non-disclosure agreements.

I'd like to see Stunt Car Racer redone, but ONLY if it kept the physics 100% the same (just a graphical update).

I reckon it wouldn't be all that hard to do a stunt car racer update as a homebrew project.

Supposdly there is a SCR editor for PC, which was used to create a homebrew sequel to it (http://www.discreetfx.com/Care/scrtnt.htm) which has new tracks but graphics are not improved. Not sure if the editor is available anywhere.

Years and years ago some developer announced it was doing a Stunt Car Racer sequel. Obviously nothing has come of it, but at least someone had the idea. I can't remember who it was though.

Hey Hey Yanni is here!

Indeed I am, and I bring good tidings of information you shall not find anywhere else about the Stardust PS3 remake.......

......Well maybe one tiny piece.........

......the right analogue stick controls the direction of fire.

Wasn't that worth the build-up? Maybe not, but the question is "what does the R3 button do?". More on this in a future update.

( As I said earlier, stupid non-disclosure agreements :( )

I would like to see a modern day update of the classic Wings game, that game has stood the test of time well, with an improved 3D graphics engine, tweaks in gameplay a modern day WWI dogfight game would be awesome.

Well they did do a remake a couple of years back on the GBA, but sadly it was more of a straight port than a true remake. I also didn't think it was as good due to much of the game using a closer in view so you had less chance to react to action as you couldn't see it as soon.

Another that suffered a similar problem was the GBA port of Speedball2, where your view was again too close to the player to see and react to the gameplay.

I hear that Soccer Kid is also on the GBA, now that was one hard game to complete fully.

I heard that too, but I've not played the GBA version. But owning a PSP I can run all the original Amiga games using PSPUAE so that's much better :)

A 3D version of Defender of the Crown could be pretty good.
Could update the conquest part to a realtime warhammer type effort.

I think that a Defender of the Crown remake is needless, because I think that the game was crap anyway. The only good thing was because it was one of the first released games for the amiga and had awesome graphics for that time, but nothing more, just a dull game.

What about Midwinter and Flames of Freedom?

Although not the greatest of games, what with Midwinter being able to be completed very quickly (if you knew the secret) but they were, imho, the first of the modern-style fps games, with more than just the bog standard duck and cover combat. Certainly I think they are akin to HALO, but with a ten year head start.

I would certainly enjoy playing them again, especially as the element of recruiting civilians to help in the task does not seem to be a feature in the modern-styled games.

Add to it a create-a-civilian mode and I think you could be looking at solid gold fun.

Midwinter was a great game in its day and a new version using current technology would be great.

That is a very good point you made about recruiting civilians. The one element of all FPSs like Half Life 2 is still the lack of true interaction with the surrounds and the people in it. You do get to trigger pre-scripted events in most modern FPS games but you don't get to truly interact with the inhabitants of the gaming world. There have obviously been some attempts at this with 3D adventures such as The Nomad Soul or Deus Ex, but I do think it could be done even better with the feeling of being in a real living and breathing world. Even games such as Oblivion haven't come close to this yet with that game's NPCs being more like moving activation points for pre-scripted events and terminals for transactions.

Wings for sure....I really want a graphically superior version of that game, would be absolutely awesome...I love that game!

I think spiritual successor is a better term than a remake. As apart from the game setting, any remake is unlikely to share anything else with the original game. And is just recycling the name to rake in some recognition sales.

The non-commercial re-makes of games are the sort I enjoy personally, e.g. Eye of the Beholder 2 (http://www.eob2remake.com/) (not tried this one yet). That don't alter the original much (maybe touch-up the visuals slightly and improve sound), but are basically ports to modern hardware.

Nostalgia is based on our originally experience of the game. Time may alter our memories and expectations when we come to replay an old game, but this is the testing grounds of how classic a game is.

Replaying old games might disappoint now a days if scoring on visual style, and the lack of other modern features we're so used to. But a lot of old games still have that special something (gameplay, accessibility, quickness to complete, etc) that fuel our desire to replay them. I fear the commercial remakes will lack this ability in years to come, for me anyway.

Thanks for that link to the EotB2 re-make. I didn't know about that project and will definitely need to try that out. I hope they do a EotB3 version too as I never got to play that originally due to it being a PC only release.

I completely agree with you regarding the nostalgia element. We often remember games from the past with rose tinted glasses and often when revisiting them after so many years it can destroy the memories we had of how great they once were.

But personally I find this doesn't happen all that often with Amiga games or games from other systems of the same 16-bit era. For me this happens the most with Playstation One game where the 3D that, at the time impressed is much, really does look terrible now. A couple of games I recently loaded up that I had such great memories of were the early PSX Pygnosis Formula One games. They now look terrible with some of the worst graphics I've seen in a very long time, but on release I remember them looking amazing and I much have played them for months.

In contrast, 2D sprite based games from the Amiga and other systems of the same generation stand up much better over time and are normally just as great as they originally were.

It's just like always, I played the EotB games, but only 30 minutes to test if they work. It seems that I'm doing this since already a longer time than I thought :hmmm:

 I think you should stop downloading games for at least a year and actually play some of them! ;)

I played the first two EotB games through fully on release and really enjoyed them both. Being a big paper and dice D&D fan added even more to me wanting to play them I think. I also mapped them both completely on graph paper as I played and marked everything on the maps with the locations of object, creatures etc... Same as I did for Dungeon Master.

I played a lot of sports games, soccer, hockey, basketball aso at the time. I finished som SSI RPGs like Buck Rogers or Champions of Krynn, and played Bard's Talke a lot. When the EotB games were released, I had already girlfriends, and I was more busy playing with them, than with games ;) I'm sure everybody will forgive me now ;)
