View Full Version : N64 emulator

There have been a few different Nintendo 64 emulators released over the years.

UltraHLE (PC) (http://www.emuunlim.com/UltraHLE/)
I still remember when the first N64 emulator, UltraHLE, was released back in 1999. I was at university at the time and we were all blown away by how good it was. I was lucky enough to own a Voodoo II graphics card at the time and the emulator was Glide3D based, requiring a Voodoo card, so that was great. It emulated Mario 64 and many others perfectly.

More amazing when you consider the actual N64 console hadn't been out long itself.

This project was closed down right after its initial release, by its developers, stating it was only to prove it was possible. Personally I think they wanted to avoid Nintendo coming after them.

There were many off-shoot N64 emulators based on this, trying to port the code over with plugins to make it work on other hardware. I remember an OpenGL plugin that worked OK with supporting GPUs, but never as good as the Glide3D original.

Project 64 (PC) (http://www.pj64-emu.com/)
This is the emulator I used the most. Using plugins you could configure it a lot to get the most from it, and make games run. It's stated as still active, and there is a version 1.7 still in closed beta. I've only used the 1.6 so will have to see if I can test this out.

N64oid (Android) (http://www.emuparadise.me/Nintendo_64_Emulators/Android/9)
I've been running this on a Sony Xperia Play and its really good. Emulates a lot of games really well. There is some slowdown on my phone, but I'm surprised it emulates as well as it does. Need to try it on my Nexus 7 as I'm sure it won't have any similar issues. I think the latest version is 2.7.

Here is a video someone posted on youtube showing it running on a Nexus 7:

1964 (PC) (http://code.google.com/p/emu-1964/)
I've not tried this one in a long time, but looking it seems to still be in active development with the latest release from June 2012. Will have to try it again.

Mupen64Plus (Multi platform) (https://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/)
This is a newer emulator I've not tried yet. Looks good, is available on Win, Linux, Mac and just announced for Android. Will have to give this one a test.

There was also Daedalusx64 on the PSP but for some reason I never tried it.

So what emulators have you tried? And which did/do you like the most?

Have I missed any out?
