Yep, you read right, the PS3 has finally been hacked. Go to the site below for more information.

http://psjailbreak.com/

PS Jailbreak is a USB plug and play solution that installs in seconds, keeping your valid warranty seal in tact.

Easy to use installer and GUI takes you step by step.

Compatible with all production models FAT and SLIM. Supports all regions: USA, JAP, PAL and KOREA

PS Jailbreak disables forced software updates and will never brick your console.

Supports all games (it does not allow backups of bluray movies , dvd movies , or past consoles games)

Backup games to your internal hard drive or external hard drive through USB, and boot directly off GUI. Eliminating the need for expensive blueray burners and costly blank media.

Play backups off your hard drives 2x as fast as off the blueray drive. This eliminates lags and glitches to provide you with smoother game play.

Open up your console to a new generation of homebrew applications. Load homebrew apps/games off any USB hard drive/flash drive.

Fully updatable with new features/updates by connecting PS Jailbreak to any computers USB port.

I read about this the other day and this is great news. It has been a very long wait, but finally we have a proper solution for the PS3. :)

And the solution was a good one in the end. Front what I understand it switches the PS3 into development mode, which bypasses the region and copy protections of the system, allowing unsigned code to be run. Brilliant! PS3, here I come... ;)

But at over €100 a pop, it's not a cheap solution.

Damn! Was looking forward to getting one of these. Also a shame it didn't come out before Demon's Souls then I'd still be on 3.15 firmware :(

but it is a USB pen? But does it have any hardware limitation? Can't someone just copy the software inside?

Harrison
24th August 2010, 15:15
If it is just a standard pen/usb drive then I can't see any reason why not. Although they might have something custom within the hardware I would be surprised. maybe some form of copy prevention within the software? Would be a bit hypocritical but you never know.

Bear in mind the following warnings (found here (http://www.bluebyte-store.com/product_info.php/info/p300_PS-JAILBREAK.html/XTCsid/gk4dntlqm5umheibi0ba0hn5b0))

This dongle only functions on a PS3 that has firmware version 3.41 , the possibility of Sony releasing a firmware update and blocking this device should be taken into account. Do not purchase this item if you want to update your system firmware in the future! We cant give any guarantee that this device might work with future firmware versions

Online gaming and the Playstation store will most likely be blocked by Sony. Do not purchase this item if you want to play online or use the Playstation store.

As the dongle is also updatable, it will possibly work like on the PSP, Sony updates firmware, hackers update dongle. But I will also wait a bit to observe what happens in the future.

Definitely worth waiting a bit before purchase, to see how long it remains successful, and what happens when Sony releases their next firmware update.

New PS3 firmware 3.42 out today, users will not notice anything of the 168MB update, it's mainly to block the hack.

Harrison

Interesting. Now to see if the hack can be updated to get around the update!

This could turn into another cat and mouse game between the hackers and Sony, just like the PSP custom firmware.

It probably disables the USB ports...

If that happens, I am gonna sue Sony, the people behin dthe hack, the guy who invented the USB port. I am gonna sue the ass offa everybody!

I just read that you can hack (ok, not anymore since 3.42) your PS3 with the Dingoo by using PSFreedom (by Waninkoko who we know also well from the Wii), check out this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEm7-LRo1xY&feature=player_embedded

So there will be no need to buy that expensive PSJailbreak USB device, as you can also use many other devices like mobile phones or even calculators. And it seems to be very easy, at least for the Dingoo, just replace one file (zImage) on the memory card, boot (in Dingux mode), then it will behave like the PSJailbreak stick, and you can launch the backup manager.

Nice.

Lucky me, I still have 3.41 on my PS3, and I now tested the whole thing with my Dingoo. I works like a charm! It's only still difficult to get downloaded games running, as there's problems with the eboot.bin file, because the backup manager is still in an early stage (v1.0). You can make backups of originals to internal or external HDD though.

My 2nd Dingoo had already Dingux on it, so I only had to replace the zImage file. Then you disconnect the PS3 (power off), plug the Dingoo to it (switched on), and then reset it again and boot into Dingux. After that you power the PS3 back on. Then you push the ON button, and immediately after you hold the eject button for 1 second, now it boots in dev mode. Then you can plug in a USB device, I used a stick. You put the backup manager in the root, and install it (in dev mode you have more options in the games section). Once installed you can launch it and backup or run games from HDD or USB.

I tried 2 games now, WipeOut HD and 3D Dot Game Heroes and they both run fine from my external USB stick. Although the games you download cannot be installed to internal HDD, at least there's no such option at the moment.

Great that it works. Has there been any news on development to overcome the new firmware update?

Demon Cleaner
10th September 2010, 14:35
They say that a new version of the backup manager will come out soon. Will have to look forward to that.

Harrison

The hackers always seem faster at continuing to update their hacks, than the developers are at stopping them. :) We see it all the time on the Wii and PSP for example.

They should just give up, and instead concentrate on adding features and incentives into their firmware/OS to make users want to pay for their games. Online only content for verified copies of games is definitely once part that always makes me buy them.

I installed now an ftp server on the PS3 which allows me to copy downloaded games directly to the internal HDD via ftp client, and that works fine. Also tried to do a backup from an original game to internal HDD, and that also works fine

Very nice indeed. That is definitely what a lot of people have been hoping for a long time.

Demon Cleaner

Btw, removing additional languages keeps the games a lot smaller! Dragon Age Origins f.ex. has german and french, and once removed you save almost 4GB of files!

what are you doing about the online?

i think there as some games that you need to update on the net to be able to play on-line, and then PS3 ask you to upgrade first the firmware...
so, if this happends with a original game you are forced to upgrade firmware...
or can you allways update a game without upgrade the PS3 firmware ???

I was playing Army of Two: The 40th Day for the first time on Friday, basically also trying it out as it's already a bit older game, so chances were high that it would ask for an update. Indeed when booting the game, it wanted to install version 1.02, I said Ok, and it just updated the game and started it normally. The PS3 was in normal boot, not in jailbreak mode. So that seems to work normally. Only thing you can't do is signing in, meaning using online play or PSN.

Demon/Teho:

i went to http://www.dingoo-scene.com/TheCompleteidiotsGuidetoDinguxWindoze.htm

to check full instructions and i did all the stuff including:
cmd line:
usbtool-win 1 hwinit.bin 0x80000000
and
usbtool-win 1 zImage_dual_boot_installer_ILI9331 0x80600000 (9331 in my case)

he said ok-done to all, but i should see some "Dingoo launching the flasher script"
but it did nothing.... black screen ...

i allready formated fat32 and copy the "local" stuff everything is ok, but after the command line nothing happend.

anyone has an ideia ?

Demon Cleaner

In the root of your micro SD card must be a folder called "local", as you have, the zImage file named "zImage" and the "rootfs" file. Then switch on the Dingoo and hold the select button pressed until you see the penguin on the screen, then it boots into Dingux. Of course only if you did everything right with the dual boot install.

Can't remember which message I got when the Dingux install successfully finished?

Tiago
22nd September 2010, 21:40
If have all the files in SD card, that i am sure.
my problem is in dual boot install.
you have to make 2 command line instructions, both gave me an OK-Done, but it should appear some linux initialization on dingoo screen, but it stay black...

Demon Cleaner
23rd September 2010, 12:49
Ok, but what happens now when you try to boot into Dingux?? Perhaps it worked and you only didn't get the Ok-Done message.

Tiago
23rd September 2010, 15:46
when i start the dingoo, it goes to the normal green screnn, nothing different from the old setup.
Even with reset+select button is the same thing, it starts as always starts.

I am sure i have all files in sd card... i wonder if all versions of dingoo work with dual boot...

They should, there's not many models, and they only differ from countries. The so called "original" ones have the Dingoo paw on the back, others are just plain black or white.

I would say that your dual boot install didn't work then, just try it again. As if it's not in the memory, you cannot boot to it. It's difficult to go wrong, if you're a bit familiar with hacks, installs, firmwares or whatever is a similar operation, you should get it working.
