Are you thinking of buying AmigaOS 4.1 and compatible hardware?

I would love to own a PPC system running OS4.1, but realistically it is a pointless purchase.

With the classic range of Amigas, even though the system is now long dead as a commercial system, we still have so much software for the system to use. Over 4000 commercial games just for starters. You can run a classic Amiga and still be exploring and enjoying new (to you) software for years to come.

In contrast the PPC branch of the Amiga OS is purely a novelty. Created purely to prove it could be done, and while it is great to see a newer version of the Amiga OS, running on newer hardware, it is mostly unsupported and has hardly any development, especially commercial. Therefore after having a play around with the system and its OS where are you left? OK, if all you did was surf the internet, send a few emails, chat with friends over IRC and maybe a couple of other things then it might serve you as a system for regular use. But personally I can't see such a purchase getting much use from me after the initial novolty has worn off.

I'm considering it, but can't afford it at the moment.
Basically, I want another Amiga to play with :)

Considering it for some time in the future but I still can't afford it.

I'm still very interested in purchasing a system, but unfortunately it is too expensive for me at the moment. :(

no way, it's too expensive for me. I bought the OS 4.0 classic, just to 'support the cause' (I have OS 4 compatible setup, CSPPC, but honestly I'm much comfortable at classic 68k) but OS 4.1 + hardware is too expensive a purchase and I'm sure I'll never use it to an extent to justify that purchase.

yes, I was considering, quite a few people here have it, but damn that's expensive...

I think you resumed in this part pretty well my thought about this.

I was giving a serious thought last January to acquire a SAMflex, but after seeing the (retail) price of it, it is just nuts. No one can justify a senseless buy for OS4.1 in my opinion.

Classic Amiga OS as much more to offer 'for the fun' of it, compared...

About a week ago, I'd finally managed to save up some cash for a SAM440EP. Placed an order a few days ago, so I'm now eagerly awaiting for the hardware to arrive in the post. Will be great fun to explore this machine and AmigaOS 4.1. I agree that it was expensive, but personally I feel its worth it. Have already looked into different programming-languages and applications, so I'm looking forward to start creating stuff for this platform. :)

It might have been worth waiting for the X1000 to be released as that would have forced the price of the SAM440EP down as people jump ship to the X1000, and also sell their SAM systems to raise money for the X1000.

However, it is still an OS4 system, and I can imagine it will be great to finally be able to try the OS out for real. Did you ditch the Mac Mini idea?

When you get the SAM please post some pictures? I would love to see it up and running.

I am going to wait and see what happens with the X1000...

Here's hoping it isn't Amiga's version of the Lisa... !

Yes, I ditched the idea of a Mac Mini. The SAM works fine for most tasks, so I don't really need the extras in the Mac. Also have a PC laptop beside this.

Sure thing. Will take a few photos of the machine tomorrow. :smokin:

I've got a Sam440ep Flex @ 800MHz, because it's the only solution to run AmigaOS 4.x nowadays.

The board, let's say it's a simple board, but very overpriced of what it offers, that's sadly true.

I hope with the new AmigaOne X1000, things will change to better of course.

It is the overpriced hardware which has always stopped me buying into OS4.

Is it just because of limited production runs and high fabrication costs? Surely these boards could be made for much less.

Totally agree!
The main reason I've not not got AmigaOS 4.x compatible hardware is that it's priced so high, not to mention, well beyond my budget at the moment.
Surely we're just paying for the name here

It's 'outdated' hardware to an extent, as it's a PPC CPU running at speeds that have long since surpassed. Am I right? :huh2: (please correct me if not!)

Once an affordable solution is available, I may consider it ....... but saying that, I'm also hoping that the NatAmi project will come on in leaps and bounds as that's of more interest to me than AmigaOS 4.x compatible hardware.

I think I'm in agreement with the rest of you here. I'd love to have an OS4 system, but not when it costs £400-odd for a PowerPC G4 system that's <1GHz.

You're both right. Let's say that, for the money you give for such a board, it's totally crap.
