No sooner does Sony release a new firmware and Dark_AleX is hot on their heels with his custom release. This new Dark_AleX custom firmware was released yesterday and is based on the new PSP firmware 3.10 release.

It contains less that is new compared to recent firmware releases, but there are a few very nice and useful additions.

1, It now supports the 4th brightness setting that was only an option when the system was connected to the mains. It will drain the battery quicker, but it is there if needed now.

2, Finally better PSP PSX game support. The previous versions of Popstation had trouble running most PAL Playstation games, but the new Popstation 3.10 is much improved and many are reporting PAL games running perfectly.

You can read the full list of improvements to Popstation at http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=47493

Have you all also seen the document dat file support in Popstation? It allows you to have game guides in a special dat format that you can call upon at any time whilst running your PSX games on the PSP. Quite cool.

And if you want the new firmare you can grab it here (http://forums.maxconsole.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=12367)

Would I do that! ;)

Would you seriously want a handheld system that you could take anywhere and be able to play Xenogears, FF7-9, FFTactics, Parasite Eve, Valkyre Profile, Suikoden, Wild Arms, Vandal Hearts... etc on? Thought not!

that you could take anywhereThat's the main issue I'm not going to buy one. Everywhere I am is also a PC, so I can play the games via emulators if I want. And as already told, if I'm gonna play an RPG, I prefer to play it at home on a TV, rather than on a PSP.

You never sit in the park on a sunny day relaxing and wishing you could play an RPG? Or get stuck on a train, plane or coach on a long journey wishing you were instead sat down playing your favourite RPG?

No. I don't take the train, plane or bus, I use my car. And at a sunny day I'm sitting on a terrace, drinking beer with some friends.

According to the latest Sony news, fw 3.11 is already at start. The cat and mouse game is fully in progress.

Yeah, I saw 3.11 mentioned on another forum and is due for release in the next few days. Quite amusing.

A bugfix has been released for this firmware:

3.10 OE-A Bugfix (http://www.ps-newz.com/Forum/thread.php?postid=2013#post2013)

I love how the hackers can release bug fixes so quickly, and yet the original companies take weeks, if not months to do that same.

I just had an amazing idea...if you can hire the hackers, your life will be made easier :doh2:

That has happened often in the past, and not just where computers are concerned either. Many car security companies employ ex car thieves to better secure they vehicles. IT security companies employ ex virus writers or server hackers to test and improve their security and products.

Sony employing Dark_AleX to make the PSP firmware secure would be amusing to say the least. Would this hacker accept such a job offer? Would it be ethical from their point of view to? After all, the main reason for the existence of the PSP custom firmware is because these hackers believe that it should be able to run unsigned homebrew code as standard and Sony blocking this ability is against their rights to use the hardware or any purpose they see fit.

Hmm, if Sony allowed emulation but were able to stop hacked versions of their software being played do you think that a middle ground could be reached?

Harrison

Not likely. Version 1.5 for the firmware allowed emulation and other homebrew to run, but copied game ISOs could only be run via a special devhook utility that took advantage of an exploit in version 1.5, yet SOny patched the next version of the firmware to remove all abilities to run any homebrew and unsigned code.

 what a shame

Would this hacker accept such a job offer?I definitely would, if the $$ were correct.

Depends what the hacker was currently doing, and where they lived. Would be amusing if they already worked for Sony! ;)

Would be amusing if they already worked for Sony! And that is even possible. Look just how fast this guy is

He codes it and then cracks it :p

Harrison

He He yeah. Or codes the custom version and then adds the security "features" for the official release!

For anyone with a PSP, and are using custom firmware, I recommend you stick with 3.03 OE-C at the moment, and dont upgrade to 3.10 OE-A. The reason is some incompatibility has been found with a couple of ISOs, plus you cannot current use any of the plugins and mods available for use with 3.03 OE-C.

The only real reason anyone needs to upgrade to the newest 3.10 OE-A firmware is if they need to run PAL PSX games. Otherwise you don't really gain anything new.
