PSP 3000 hacked

Barely 2 weeks after the capitulation of the hacker scene facing the security measures of the PSP 3000, they eventually managed to hack it.

Due to a processor based battery from Datel named Lit Blue Tool, the PSP 3000 is set to the so called service mode and becomes a victim for manipulating the system software. A real paradise for hackers and the homebrew scene, who will probably provide the PSP 3000 with new "features" in near future.

That's great news.

It will definitely be worth anyone looking for a new PSP to get a PSP3000 over the older PSP2000 slim model if it can run custom firmware, because the 3000 does have a much improved screen (higher contrast and better in bright day light), but the new built in microphone is really only useful for SOCOM or Skye users, so if you already have a PSP then it isn't worthwhile upgrading as there is little else different between this new version and the old slim model.

I hope they've improved the D-Pad.

I had an original PSP, but sold it because the D-Pad was horrific. For fighting games it was near impossible to hit diagonals and it was very unresponsive compared to controllers even in the 8-bit era.

The new screen does look nice though.

I never had much issue with the D-Pad and still use by phat PSP quite a lot. Although I don't tend to play many beat' em ups on it. Mainly RPGs and RTS genres.

But I did read in a review that they thought the D-Pad and nub were a bit stiffer and more responsive on the new 3000.

I also had problems with the D-Pad when playing C64 games, almost every time you fail to push diagonals, you instantly die.

Indeed they have, nice to see SONY have thrown all standards out the window again, but this time it has come back to bite em on the arse. I remember when they dumped the standard for scart sockets, and made AV1 an input and AV3 an output. Caused us loads of problems.

If I read right, the new screens scanned verticaly and not horizontal.

That is just class. Maybe SONY will go back and actually care about R&D instead of using other people tech. Most of sony's stuff are other companies just with their badge on it.

I dont hate sony, just their lazy attitude. Panasonic are the only company that still R&D everything they make, and never use other companies tech.

As this thread is now already a bit older, I'm wondering if there's already some custom firmwares for the 3000 models? I didn't look yet for it, perhaps someone here knows it, and how hard it would be to hack the thing.

At the moment any PSP with firmware less than version 4 can be downgraded, and therefore custom firmware installed. However I still don't think any PSP3000's can be hacked yet.

However while custon firmware cannot be installed on a PSP3000 model I think it can be run using HEN (save game exploit).

I assembled my old PSP again yesterday (for info, it was disassembled in January 2008 :o), and also put one of the latest cfw's again, the 5.50 GEN-B, or what is it called. Now it fully works again, is golden yellow, and perhaps I won't buy another one. Wanted to buy a slim one perhaps for the girlfriend.
