The turn based combat system was originally invented for video games as a way to easily manage combat situations within RPG and RTS style games when computers didn't really have the processing power to handle the battles in real time.

However that has now changed. Today's computers and consoles can easily process a battle, no matter how large, in real time. However this introduces a lot of problems in itself for the player. In a turn based system the player can easily micro manage each aspect of the battle for each turn without having to worry about something happening during the selection of their next actions. In contrast, with a real-time battle system everything is constantly happening and you do not have the time to consider possible next moves.

Each has something going for it though. With Turn Based combat you can really play around with everything available and experiment, creating routines in certain battles, and then watch them being played out. Whereas in real-time combat you get the sense of being a part of the action, with your adrenaline level increasing as the combat intensifies, giving you a sense of being there.

Different people prefer one or the other. There is also a third system which is a hybrid of the two. Real-time combat that can be paused to manage your characters, then unpaused to continue. Games such as Baldur's Game and Dungeon Siege use this style of combat system and I like this the most. Being able to fight in real-time, but when everything is getting too much, or you lose track of certain events within a battle you can kill the space bar, pausing the action, and then take a few moments to move around the battle and analyse things, selecting the next actions for your characters, then unpausing and continuing with the selected actions played out.

And more games are using this real-time with pause style of combat these days. Fallout 3 is a good example of one of the latest games to do this, with you being able to pause time to select and taget areas of an enemy, before unpausing and watching your weapon's ammo hit home.

So which combat system do you prefer? And why?

I like them all, although it depends of the genre of the game of course. In RPGs I prefer turn based, making the gameplay less hectic.

Depends on the system too, I've really enjoyed turn based play in games like Advance Wars and Civ Rev on the DS. It's ideal for a handheld as it can be put down for a moment while you f.ex get on the train or take a seat, also the smaller nature might make real time a bit fiddly.

I've not played many real-time ones I have to admit.

I've got to admit that traditional turn based gameplay is becoming a little bit ... stale. Real time combat is quite simply more exciting, dynamic and chaotic - provided the pace isn't too fast. Star Ocean TTEOT was a bit of a nightmare at times because of the break-neck speed. Parasite Eve's combat system was spot-on, I thought.

I really enjoyed real time in the very beginning, first RTS I played on the PC were Warcraft and Command & Conquer. Then I was truly amazed when playing Warcraft 2 and suddenly there was a floud of RTS coming out, just one after the other. I mostly enjoyed Total Annihalation and the first Age of Empires, and 1 year later, I almost totally gave up playing RTS because they bored me, it was always the same.

And nowadays I can't play them anymore because my PC wouldn't run them properly, but I don't care, I discovered console RPG games ;)

I prefer Real Time combat myself. However, I'm not that big on RPGs

Both, it depends of what kind of game you play.
I remenber UFO and the clones after it, they could very nice, but the "turn" system has to be well done to avoid monotony (is that the word is english? monoty = thing that repats a lot of times?) i think if you could get both in the same game could be the best solution

You got it right the first time. Monotony. :)

Oops  just saw that this one is in the RPG section, so then it's clear, I prefer turn based combat. Can I undo my vote?

I lean towards turn-based as well, but that doesn't mean I dislike the realtime ones. But I tend to like being able to wait and think things through more.

I still shows me like I voted "I like'em all" (it's in italic).

I can't change that once voted. I can only manually adjust the totals for each voting option. Unless I were to go into the database directly, and I think that is too much hassle.

Ok, just wanted to know that :)
