View Full Version : Technology End of the World?

The Large Hadron Collider goes on line on 10th September and with the possibility of the experiment forming quasars and micro black holes could this be the end of the world? The good news is if it does happen is that we loose France and Switzerland first.;)

I bet some guy at work £10 that it isn't going happen. If he ends up being right, then that £10 is the least of my worries.

Can't we lose the United States while we're at it? ;)

Well, in The v85 Book of Utter Scientific Bollox, it states that:
In theory, generating a microscopic alternative centre of gravity within close proximity of the earth's natural gravity could generate shockwaves through the very mantle of the earth, disrupting the flow of the earth's core and forcing molten rock up through the faultlines between the plates.
One of the most likely places to suffer would be the San Andreas Fault, and the effects could also be felt in Yellowstone. Other problems could also be felt along the other faultlines, and areas of volcanic activity. The force could even re-awaken some of the long-dead calderas.

I read Flash Forward (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flash-Forward-Robert-J-Sawyer/dp/0812580346) by Robert J Sawyer, in which everyone's conciousness is fast forwarded 21 years into the future for 2 minutes as soon as the particles collide in the new LHC. Everyone experiences where they are and what they're doing 21 years hence. Great read.
Pray you don't find yourself with another woman who's clearly your new wife!

What if you are dead? Do you suddenly find yourself trapped in a coffin? Or even worse, what if you were cremated? Would be a tight squeeze!
Anyway... if this does "disrupting the flow of the earth's core and forcing molten rock up through the faultlines between the plates" would this destroy the earth, or just get rid of a large percentage of our current "problem" civilizations?
I'm quite glad I just visited Italy. Would be annoying to have just missed out on seeing Pompeii and Herculaneum! And that just gave me a thought. Imagine if that did happen? In another 2000 years time someone might be carefully uncovering the USA for tourists to see and visit! There is a difference though. Who would really want to? I mean, look what they would find! All the badly constructed US wooden buildings would be long gone so all they would find is a very large number of silicone implants and plastic fast food signs and chairs! Not really something I would like our era to be remembered for!

I think if it does destroy the world then i'd love for someone, be they god or aliens, to leave a sign saying that "Some questions are better left being unanswered."

The world better not end today, we've got a new TV coming and I want to watch the footy tonight...

Not much loss if it just means the end of football! ;)
They have so far only tested it by firing a particle beam in one direction. It will be on 21st October when they start to experiment with collisions. Then we will find out if it is really the end.

I won't start buying my Christmas presents yet then!!

You won't 'find out' it's the end, you'll just...be in heaven or whatever.

That depends on which theory you think will happen. The one I find most believable is that it will destabalise the Earth's core causing the faught lines around the world to generate huge earth quakes and for all the volcanoes to erupt. The UK will feel it but should be spared initially so we will at least get to witness the destruction of part of the US first. :)

You never know it might reactivate old fault lines in which case you might see Mount Snowdon go BOOOMMMMM!!! Hey Submeg isn't Austalia pretty close to the Pacific Ring of Fire????;) Sorry Harrison looks like you might loose Neighbours as well.

Noooooooooooooooooooo! Not Neighbours! :(
At least we will have a few months before the UK catches up with the Australian episodes, so I can continue to enjoy it for a bit. Now that is sad!

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Harrison will be watching an Australian soap whilst the world burns!!!

It would be better if something more exotic happened...like in creating the Higgs boson, they also create the antiparticle which would remove mass from other particles. We would all become weightless and float off into space.

Or it would just allow us to finally invent the hovercar!

It'd be more fun if some of the scientists (especially the keyboard player from D:Ream) got transported to a parralel dimension where they had to find there way back ala Sliders.

Due to technical difficulty the end of the world has been delayed until early next year which means yet another christmas with annoying relatives.

Yes, this breakdown of the accelerator is quite annoying!

I bet the failed parts were made in Britain. If the British had built the Death Star the rebels wouldn't have bothered stealing the plans as it would be trillions over budget, take at least 5 years longer than expected and the giant laser would be just about powerfull enough to light a rugby players fart at close range.;)
You dream of the world ending and once it's switched on everybody is wondering about with silly voices and wondering why the LHC doesn't work (for those who didn't know the problem was due to a leak of liquid Helium that caused some magnets to overheat). Still it'll give Brian Cox a chance to revive his pop career and rerelease "Things, can only get better".

I'd like to D:REAM make a giant comback and at the start of their first concert at Wembley, they sing "Things can only get better" JUST AS THE WORLD ENDS.
In the afterlife, it would be voted as THE most ironic moment on Earth, ever.

You lot will all be laughing on the other side of your dimension if this thing ****s up.
But seriously though, science is cool, and there are a lot of people worried about the LHC and tehy really shouldn't be. I took 'a brief history of time' to read on holiday and it said some stuff about things so don't worry and all that, even though it was written well before the LHC had even been thought of (although smaller accelerators were around).

Also, if we're all going to die, it will happen in a nanosecond so there's nothing you can do about it. You won't even know. Just chill!
