Anyone here got any recomendations on coffee?

I'm getting a little bit bored with supermarkets own brand coffee, especially after having alots of filter coffees and espresso based coffees from shops like Marks & Spencers and Costa, which have been very nice, if not a little expensive (I wonder how much profit costa make out of a £2.35 medium latté).

well, here in Portugal, and also in Italy, we have the best coffe in the world!!! :)
Both contries have the biggest traditions related to coffee.
Portugal started when we reached Brazil, Angola etc...

Coffe is good for 3 things:

- Machine brand, the best brand is "Cimbanilo" (Italy) used only for expressos, you can see it in coffes shops/restaurants in Portugal/Italy. This machine use water with high pressure to take a good caffe. It is big, +/- 1 meter large, the bigger ones can take 6 coffees in a row. In Italy/Portugal in a normal day in the morning a coffee shop with a machine like this take around 600 coffes in a single hour.
Small machines can produce a very good coffee to.
Nespresso from Nestle is probably the best one.

- coffe brand (not so important as the machine, belive it !)
In Portugal "Delta" should be the best one"
In Italy, there are 4 or 5 excellent brands, i like segafredo.

-water (very very important), if the water is to much clean and pure it will not take good coffees. Do not use water from bottles, is no good, it has to be from your normal canalization.

Dont forget, the greatest coffee is allways expresso, and it should be very small cup.
Smaller means stronger or more concentrated.

for regualr (at home instant coffee) *i can hear Taigo wincing at that*

I would recomend, Nescafe, Gold Blend... there is no other instant as good... Also their decafe version is perfect in taste too.... all though i end up with caffine withdrawal symptoms though.

I would also like to suggest Cart Noir make a nice roast too for instant... available from any supermarket.

when imma out and about then normaly i go with a strong arabic blend in a latte'

Rules for coffee.
1. NEVER drink instant. It's the work of the Devil.
2. Coffee should only be strength 4 or 5. Anything else is pointless.
3. Coffee is made by adding boiling water onto coffee grounds and then after a few minutes the liquid is poured into a mug and milk and sugar can be added. NOTHING ELSE.
After that it is up to personal taste as to which bean, country to try.

I believe Nescafe Gold Blend is what we have in the machines at college. I would say it is nice for instant coffee, but I only tend to drink proper coffee at home.

Harrison

I've never been able to stand any Nescafe instant coffee. It is probably the worst tasting instant coffee in the world from my point of view. For instant coffee I always buy Douwe Egberts. And normally the Pure Gold one, but sometimes the stonger Pure Indulgence.

But at home I prefer to make coffee in a cafetière, and normally I buy Costa Rican, Kenyan or Colombian Waitrose coffee.

However if I'm out I normally buy Espresso and I would love to have my own espresso machine at home (I keep trying to add one to the wedding list but I've not managed it yet!)

As for decaffeinated coffee. Why? What is the point in that? I refuse to drink the stuff! It's nearly as bad as skimmed milk!

Buleste
12th May 2008, 12:56
I have to disagree Douwe Egberts tastes like floor sweepings to me. It must be something to do with the vacuum sealing. Decaffinated is about as much use as Boris Johnson or non alcaholic beer or Low fat anything.
Destroy all Starbucks and the clones of Starbucks they take all the joy in drinking coffee and it's impossible to get a normal strong cup of coffee without any sort of "extras".

For bog standard instant, I usually have Nescafe Alta Rica or Blend 37.
Very rarely, I will get Gold Blend for a change.

I think I will see about going to Marks and Spencers and seeing what kind of filter coffees they offer. They ought to have some really nice ones for sale as they certainly have nice coffees in the cafe.

Other than that, i will have a look in waitrose.

I'm a tea drinker as a general rule, but the occasional coffee goes down well. Brand I'm not too fussy, willing to try all.

I agree that real coffee is the best however, but going back to instant I have a question:

Milk first or after?

I always put instant coffee in first, then add milk, then add hot water. Tastes much nicer than the granules, hot water and finally milk.

Or, for that extra special instant coffee experience - half milk, half water in a mug, microwave full power for a couple of minutes then add the instant coffee! Watch it froth over the top of the mug and taste the difference!

If you are going to do a half milk and half water, you may as well go the whole hog and just have full milk.

Very nice.
Juts make sure you use more coffee than normal otherwise it will be a bit bland.

I used to do my coffee with just milk until about 4 years ago. I just put 1 coffee and 2 sugars into a cup, filled it with milk and microwaved it.

Well, for me it's strong, black coffee, end of story. Big mug too. I hate small coffee cups. You know when you go to some family get-together like a christmas dinner or something, and they take out their finest cake and dinner set, and they have these tiniest little coffe cups? I absolutely hate those! What's the point anyway? One sip and the damn thing's empty! No, big mugs. All the way. I want to have time to taste the stuff too.

And milk, and sugar? Herecy!! Don't get me started!

No offense, but ... I simply can't imagine people liking the taste of black coffee :eyebrow:

Probably just me, though.

I used to drink coffee, but never could manage to drink it without at least a little bit of milk and sugar. Haven't had a cup in years though, since the consumption of so much caffeine during weekdays made me have huge headaches in weekends.

Milk first with real coffee not that instant sh1t.

Instant is only good for Milky coffee (all milk 1 spoon and then zapped).

Black coffee is good when you have the right blend but only when you have to stay awake for the next 24 hours.

Totally agree!!! You shouldn't let either anywhere near a decent cup of coffee. Strong and black is the only way I drink coffee too and I hate even a small amount of milk in coffee, tastes horrible.

Yep, definitely just you! ;)

Seriously though, most people who put milk sugar in their coffee haven't actually ever tried it straight black with nothing added. It tastes much better.

In a design office I used to work at we had this Canadian guy working for us that used to work in a really good coffee shop and we had a nice expensive coffee machine in the office kitchen so he would come around and take orders and make us all a coffee every day. That was really cool.

Update on coffee.

I have been drinking Marks and Spencer's coffee for the last couple of years. Also had some Waitrose coffee. Both are lovely. I tend to have the Italian blend from M&S. With a little bit of sugar.

But, I have recently changed. I decided to get M&S' decaffeinated Columbian coffee. I wasn't sure what I would think of it, but it is really nice. Can't drink it with any sugar though.

I changed to decaffeinated coffee as I think I was drinking too much caffeine. It sometimes made my stomach feel funny and made me go to the toilet too much. I don't seem to be getting any withdrawal symptoms, but drinking decaffeinated coffee certainly feels 'different' to drinking normal coffee.

For instant coffee I've recently been drinking Kenco Costa Rican and it has become my favourite. For peculated I often go for Waitrose also, but like to explore different makes from various regions. We did try some that was reduced in Home Scene recently from Italy and that was horrible.

I never drink instant. One of teh few joys I have in my life is drinking good real coffee from here. (http://www.ecocoffeeshop.co.uk/index.asp) They aren't the cheapest or the fastest to deliver but their Mocha Sidamo is pure heaven. Couldn't survive the day without it.

I got a Nespresso coffee machine about one year ago (remember the commercial with Clooney?), and I have to admit that all of their coffees (espressos) taste really fine. Sometimes they have a limited edition for 3 months, which also was always good so far. Not drinking coffee every day though.

Stephen Coates

My grandparents got a Nespresso machine a few years back. The coffee was lovely :), but it never worked properly. The coffee grounds would come through into the cup. The manufacturer took it back to check it out and sent a courtesy machine, but that did the same thing. They then got their machine back and it still did it. I was never sure why but after they had wasted a load of coffee on it, they sent it back for a refund.

Strange, I never had these problems. Did they use the original coffee capsules? Because I once tried some from another brand, and it was a bit pain to get them out of the machine again, quite similar looking, but not exactly the same shape as the original.

I'm still on the Marks and Spencers Italian blend. I did try and change to decaffinated a few years ago, but that didn't work out. I just try and drink the regular coffee a bit less these days.

I don't have instant at home (no point really), but my Dad has had some of that stuff where they mix some regular coffee with instant. Can't remember the particular type that he had, but he did once mis-pronounce it as 'al jazeera'. That was quite good.
