Just wondering if anyone has a CCTV camera on the outside of their house and if you've any recommendations? Wireless ones start at £55 including the receiver, so you can watch someone smashing your backdoor window on your TV, from the comfort of your own bed.

Am thinking of getting a camera over the back door as a deterrent against burglars.

I will leave you with a small quote from Withnail and I:
"I mean to have you, boy, even if it must be burglary!"

If you are thinking of using CCTV as a deterent then why not use an empty shell. It's cheaper. Either way any determined burgler is just going to ignore the CCTV as they will be waring some form of hood or cap to hide their faces and if it's to stop the hoodies and chavs then all they'll do is smash the camera so you'll have to spend fortunes on replacements. On top of that sometimes by placing a camera on your house you unwittingly antagonise people and then can start a neighboorhood war.
There's too much fear and paranoia in this world, don't buy into it by getting CCTV, vote for someone who promises to get more police on the streets and get rid of some of the stupid rights given to offenders.

Having more police on the streets will not help protect my children in the few minutes it will take for someone to break in and get upstairs to them at 3am. I want a camera so if I hear something, I can immediately check the house without alerting them. Also I can sit at the top of the stairs with a cricket bat :ninja:

But then most burglars will only go into unoccupied rooms like the living room or kitchen. If they go into bedrooms it's usually only when the house is empty so you won't be there to use the CCTV and it'll probably get knicked anyway. Besides ou getting put away for beating the crap out of an intruder is hardly going to protect your kids is it?
The honest law abiding citizens need to stop being scared and claim the streets back. This can only be done by getting more police patrolling the streets and reducing the the "human rights" allowed to criminals.

I would also say it isn't the best idea to place security cameras on your house as it will make people think there is something worth breaking into the house for.

If I were going to add some to my house I would look at ways to hide the camera completely from view, so you can still observe without attracting any attention.

How about some kind of miniture camera which you could hide in the window or something, then run a small wire to the television?

I would think that that would be better than a proper CCTV camera for a house.

Does your area have a high crime rate?

When I lived at home we had a fake one (just a shell) and it looked gash. Still, we never got broken into. But then we probably wouldn't even without the obviously fake camera.

If someone is breaking into your house you are allowed by law to use reasonable force to deter them. Whacking them multiple times round the back of the head would be excessive, but a good clout or two should be fine. Or get a big ****ing dog*.

*As in, a dig that is ****ing big, not a dog that likes to.... eh, nevermind.

Mind you if someone breaks in and sees you ****ing a big dog then i'm sure they'll quickly leave.

Yeah, but that's going to be a tiring way of keeping your property safe all night long, every day just on the off chance an intruder comes in and gets freaked out.

Harrison

Easier to just film it the once and then project the video onto a wall, looping all night long.

Good point - I'm sure Burns said he had a projector too (quite a while ago, though, back on the old forum probably).

That s really going to be a great image for his kids when they get up in the middle of the night for a pee, Daddy doing something nasty to a Doberman.

I did think that too. Just imagine the questions for him at the next school parents evening. ;)

Imagine how much therapy they'd have to go through.

I think that would be very worrying.

Best off just keeping something avaliable to attack the burglars with.. You would have to be careful though as you wouldn't want the burglars getting you done by the police for assault or GBH or something.

(It wouldn't surprise me if that would happen, and I'm pretty sure it all ready has)

It has been done where someone defended their home from burglars and got prosecuted and then the buglars sued them and treid to get damages. The law has been changed now however so that you can beat seven shades out of them if they are facing you but you can't touch them if they have their back to you. The only true deterrant is an effective Police force and a working criminal justice system. We have neither in Britain at the moment the polititians are too busy lining their own pockets to do anything about it.

Na... the only true deterrent is a guard dog trained to go straight for the nuts! Barbed wire and rusty nails wrapped around the top of all fences and places anyone might try to climb over, and a large pond directly on the other side of the fence where it looks easiest to climb over.

Oh and very bright security lights. I actually think they are a much better deterrent than any security cameras because the sudden lighting up of the area is always going to make someone jump and will instantly alert anyone in the area to the presence of someone triggering the light coming on.

Like Guantanamo Bay?

Exactly! Or my parents house! As that description was of that. ;)

So...summing up...your recommendations are:

1. I get a Dobermann, film myself getting jiggy with it, then project this in an endless loop using my projector against the wall of the house.
2. Train a guard dog to go straight for the nuts.
3. Ensure I only hit the front of the intruder whilst I beat seven shades of cr@p out of him.
4. Get barbed wire and rusty nails wrapped around the top of all fences and places anyone might try to climb over, and a large pond directly on the other side of the fence where it looks easiest to climb over.
5. Light up the back yard like Guantanamo Bay.
6. Something about getting more Police on the street.

As always, your input has been invaluable. Literally.

You are legally allowed to do whatever you want to intruders, as long as you leave the body elsewhere.

It's called innocent until proven guilty and is an integral part of British Law.;)

Yep. Everything seems to be there.

Glad we could help! :lol::lol::lol:

BTW, I would also like to add to TiredOfLife's last post. If you keep some pigs they are the perfect way to "hide" all evidence as they will eat through anything including bones, so no evidence will be left to convict you.

Buleste
29th April 2008, 13:23
I disagree about the pigs. You can't trust them. Take a look at that serial killer in Canada who happened to be a farmer. O.k. he was only convicted on 10 counts of murder when it his thought he commited over 50 but the pigs didn't destoy all the evidence.

Harrison
29th April 2008, 13:52
True, but if you feed them one bit at a time it improves the chances of all the evidence being cleaned up.

7. Keep pigs to feed dead bodies to.

In all seriousness though IMO you would be better spending money on upgrading locks and safety lights rather than installing CCTV as CCTV will not deter the professional burglars only the junkie scum who will be detered by proper security anyway. The chances are by putting a CCTV camera on your house you are more likely to provoke burglars because if you have enough money to spend on CCTV then you must have enough money to spend on the latest gadgets and so the house must be crammed full of good stuff to nick. It would be cheaper, safer and more sensible to fit proper locks, add security lights and use common sense precautions to prevent burglary.

Harrison

Exactly what I think too. As I mentioned before. Lights coming on with deter people much more than cameras, and the lights coming on will also alert you quicker than a camera.
