I wanted to update to a newer version of Nero. Whilst uninstalling the previous version, I get an error, and the uninstall stops suddenly. So no chance of removing Nero. So I deleted it and removed all the entries from the registry manually. After rebooting when trying to install the newest version, it still says that an older version of Nero is installed, but there isn't anymore.

Does a special Nero uninstaller exist?

Have you tried the Windows Install clean up programme? You can get it here. (http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe) that normally gets rid of any lasting traces. The other thing to try is get Regcleaner and have a look on that for any traces of Nero. Personally i find Ashampoo Burning Studio quite good.

I just found a Nero General Clean Tool and it worked

I attached it here, in case someone needs it.

Useful to know if I ever get a similar problem.

I'm guessing that what happened was one of the following.

a, Nero installs its own Abstraction Layer to use when burning a disc so that the host OS doesn't have to already have one installed. When you uninstalled Nero the abstraction layer driver was left behind.

b, Or you had a virtual drive setup for Nero and when you uninstalled it wasn't first removed from the settings so was left behind but hidden.

I had similar problems with Nero 8, along with it not recognising my version of DirectX 9. So in the end I rolled back to Nero 6, although I do miss the versatility of Nero 8.

As for using Nero's Virtual Drive, I have Alcohol 120% installed for just that purpose, due to its ease of use, especially in Opus.

I gave up on Nero once the OEM versions that came with drives were cut down and had popup adverts and self replicating icons in order to push you for the full version.

The last one I used was v5 before finding alternatives.

Imgburn and CD Burner Pro are excellent freeware programs that satisfy all my burning needs. Free software today is getting to really high standards, and I like how we can make a donation to say thanks to the authors. :)
