Hello all,

Are there any new space games in development on the moment?
I know about Starcraft 2, X3: Terran Conflict and the possible new Wing Commander but I would like to know if there are any other projects that haven't been mentioned in magazines or on the internet.

I'd read about Jumpgate, but not seen any trailers before. That is looking really good. Looking forward to this one for sure.

A Space Strategy RTS game that has just come out that you may also be interested in is called Sins of the Solar Empire (http://forum.classicamiga.com/showthread.php?t=1905). I highly recommend it. I've been playing it a bit since it came out and it is very good, although quite hard, and so probably more for existing fans of space RTS games like Homeworld, rather than someone new to the genre. The game is epic in scale and very complex. Each game, even a small one against a single computer controlled opponent can take hours to play our as you develop your tech tree and start to build your empire, and then enter into expansion into the universe and eventually conflict.

The closest comparison is Supreme Commander in Space, but much grander in scale. That statement in itself should tell you how big the scope of the game is.

Heh, I guess I should have mentioned that but I do know about Sins of a Solar Empire ;)

I would highly recommend checking out the official site for the latest info on this game, while its not out yet they are taking names for Beta testing and I dont think that will be too far away either.

I went to the codemasters event in Birmingham on March 14th specifically to check it out, meet the devs and got to have a play of the pre-alpha state game. I took this vid; http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QWCVT77wX6Q My camera work doesnt do it justice, but you can see some interesting things, like a destroyable battle station that will require team work to take out etc etc.

I still play the games predecessor that has been running since 2001 called simply Jumpgate - although now its called Jumpgate Classic (JGC) since news of Jumpgate Evolution (JGE) began to surface, so if your looking for an online space game that is about your skills with/vs other players its worth checking out. > a youtube link to a vid from JGC http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hBX8cq0BCdE
Official JGC site = http://www.jossh.com

I doubt it will be up for modding as its an MMO. Though I am sure there will be continual content addition etc like other MMO's (including its predecessor) regularly have. And rgr on the GFX, check http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=akGVUV1fE7o out - again shoddy camera work but the Jumpgates are stunning even in the poor quality my camera chucked out.

Hello,

Well I am looking in particular for single player games.

There is always The Babylon Project, The Minbari Project, Wing Commander and Beyond The Red Line which are all based around the Freespace 2 engine and links to which can be found on a seperate thread.

Harrison
28th March 2008, 10:46
I second that. You should definitely check out all of the Freespace 2 based projects that we have both been listing in its own thread here (http://forum.classicamiga.com/showthread.php?t=1932). Plus we have a more detailed discussion of them going on here (http://forum.classicamiga.com/showthread.php?t=1783).

They are all completely free, you don't need the original game as it is open source and the game engine is included within each project's installer. And the games are highly polished and great fun to play. And even though they are all based on the same game engine, they do all play differently and give a different gaming atmosphere.

And the graphics whilst a little dark are (with the exception of the Wing Commander game) superb.

Hello,

Well I am looking in particular for single player games.

A fair enough point. But as the Jumpgate Evolution game is not even in beta test state yet, do feel free to sign up to its forums, read what others think and post your own thoughts and ideas on what would make your ideal space game.

Since it's a MMO, i don't know if it can be labelled as a space game, but there is stargate world to come end of this year, it looks pretty nice. I'm a huge fan of the serie and i think that the possibilities are huge, i hope they'll do it well :fingercrossed:

I've been keeping an eye on the SG:W game since it was first mentioned. I'm also a big fan of the series and hope they do it justice.

It was a real shame they cancelled the original FPS Stargate game though. That was very close to completion, but then MGM pulled the plug on the Australian development team and it forced them into receivership! Not nice!

I was so disappointed too... Such a great potential, such a waste. MGM really messed it up there :thumbsdown2:

But maybe this one will be the first a (successful) line of sci-fi MMORPG (unlike swg). I love EVE but i'm just not patient enough.

Another title filled with promises: Star Trek online (http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=iOpoDwrVwQc). It must be awesome to start with a space cadet and to level him until he becomes captain of a starship and goes on missions in the delta quadrant...

If they do ST:O correctly it will be great, as long as there are enough players to make it work. The ability to go from exploring down on a world, such as the Klingon home world, to being able to pilot your ship wherever you like, docking with space stations and trading with other players will be brilliant if they get it right.

Am I right in thinking though that each player will have his own complete ship now? Originally it was going to be that each player started off at the very bottom of the ranks and worked his way up, becoming a member of a ship's crew and taking on the role of one of them, such as an engineer, security officer, medical staff, bridge crew... and everyone having to work together to make the ship function. I have the feeling that could have been very complex to work in a game, but amazing if it had. They could have used AI to take over the roles of key personnel when no real players were available for that role.

Netdevil and codemasters have launched a new look web site for Jumpgate Evolution one linked to codemasters own account system and forums.

It's got the same addy of http://www.jumpgateevolution.com

But... you will need to re-apply for Beta using a codemasters codeM account.

KK, you know what to do.. sign up!

And here is the official website: http://startrekonline.com/

This made my day ^_^

This has been in development for a long time and I've been reading about it since the original ideas and event previews. It is still a shame that the original idea that players would all be a part of a starship working as a member of the crew all together was never followed. It should still be great though. All I need now is to work out when I will actually have time to play it.

It looks very nice, too bad it was not the voice of Patrick Stewart but the rest looks cool and the space battles are pretty neat...

It's hard to get back into Star Trek after they killed off Data. I tsill watch The Next Generation though on Space.:)

I had completely forgotten about the ending to Nemesis. That was a very sad, and then touching moment with B-4. But that was an unexpected twist in the film and something unexpected in a ST film (to kill one of the main characters). However, with B-4 containing the memory engrams from Data it could easily be written into another film that B-$ evolved to form a very similar personality to that of Data. Although data was the only one with the emotion chip (right?) so B-4 would always be missing emotion, much like the earlier Data.

Also Codemasters are at Gencon this year, hopefully with a more advanced version of Jumpgate available to play. It's just a shame that the Darlings won't be there as I still have a copy of Ghosthunters I could get signed. Or even dig out my copy of Rockstar Ate My Hamster and get that signed :).

Will try and get as much details about the game whilst I am there, and will fill you all in with the info when I get back.

Oh, and Darth Vader is coming to Portsmouth on 13th September. And that's the REAL Darth, aka David 'Always Use the Code When You Cross the Road' Prowse, not some pansy Canadian...

dont know if anyone talked about this space game:

X3 - reunion - saw it for the first time last sunday, woooooohhhh
Looks very similar to the Elite series concept. It's a beutifull FPS space game with a lot of strategy to, maybe a mix of:

- Elite Frontier
- x-wing/tie-fighter

The graphics are superb.

It cost me 9.99 euros thru Steam engine, payed with paypal, and dowload the 4GB very fast, around 450kb/s, don't know about the rest of UK speeds, but here in Portugal it's a very good one.

If you never saw it, give a look at you tube

Here's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Tension#X-Tension) some info about the X games series, it seems you didn't know them.

Harrison
23rd December 2008, 11:52
The X series is great. I've been playing it since the original first version. X3 Reunion is definitely the best of the series and expands on the game quite a lot, being able to own whole solar systems and amass a large network of ships that you can automate to get on with things like mining, while you enjoy getting on with other stuff.

The only thing with X3 is that it moves away from the original game's ideas. I loved the start of the first game, with you testing a new experimental spaceship for Earth and an accident sends you half way across the galaxy... Farscape like... into a universe that is completely different, and the first thing that happens is a large ship looms down on you and you are contacted by a strange alien race who help you out with some initial upgrades to your ship.

Doesn't X3 not also need top hardware to run properly?

Harrison
23rd December 2008, 16:50
No, X3 will run on quite well on a PC a few years old. It was released in 2005 so is a couple of years old now. A Pentium 4 or Athlon XP at 2GHz or above will run it fine, and any graphics card with 128MB ram and DirectX 9 support.

I used to play it on an Athlon XP 3000+ with 1GB ram and a 9800 Pro graphics card, with all the settings right up at 1280x1024. And it was smooth and looked great.
