Note from admin: This guide is for commercial software costing $25. This is therefore a commercial advert for this software.

Guide for beginner how to convert WMV, ASF, WMA, AVI, RMVB, RM, RA, MOV ect to psp

PSP Video Format

The video codec supported by the PSP is a proprietary variant of the H.264 codec closely related to DivX. The format is also referred to as the Memory Stick Video Format. The audio codec used is AAC.

Before loading video onto your PSP it needs to be transcoded using one of the tools listed below. Some compatible (Sony) devices may be able to produce video in the correct format, and therefore may not require transcoding.

The PSP manual states that the maximum supported bit rate is 768kbps The native screen resolution is 480x272, which means it has an odd aspect ratio of 1.764, not quite 16x9. The device supports several scaling modes (normal, zoom, full, original).

File Naming Convention

When storing video on the card a strange file naming convention is used. All video files and thimbnails need to be stored in a folder called: /MP_ROOT/100MNV01.

Each video in this folder is represented by an data file and a thumbnail file called: M4V00001.MP4 and M4V00001.THM. The 00001 component of the file name is incremented for multiple videos.

The thumbnails are simple 160x120 JPEG images stored with the .THM extension. Note that the title of the video is stored in the header of the file.

Very nice tutorial, I just moved it from Amiga General to Mobile Gaming. And btw, welcome to the boards.

It is indeed a nice tutorial.

However I feel this is verging on spam because this thread was originally posted in the Amiga General forum and the tutorial is for a commercial piece of software, with the whole of this tutorial and its images copied directly from the software's website. Look at this page (http://www.pavtube.com/video_to_psp/guide/) and you will notice that the post is identical and the images in the post are even linked directly from this page. Therefore this is a direct advertising post from the makers of this software!

For anyone reading and interested in this PSP video conversion software, please take into account that it is actually commercial software and although a free trial is available for download, the full version does cost $25. Also consider that completely free alternative video converter software is also available and works fine (I use it).

Also this tutorial is slightly inaccurate. It states that video files must be named in a specific way and stored in a specifically named directory. This is not true if you are using a custom firmware. I've called files whatever i like and the work. This might not be true of official Sony firmware, but who uses that? ;)

I have therefore emailed the poster to ask about this. Their email address is however a gmail account and not one from the software's domain. But as this is an indirect advert for commercial software I feel they are trying to use this forum as a free way to advertise their product. We get quite a lot of traffic per day on here and therefore they in turn are getting a lot of exposure from this to advertise their software. For Example, because we have carried a few tutorials on the forum for some time, explaining things like installing a custom firmware or running a PSP emulator, searches for PSP and related keywords do often return this forum in the search results and we therefore do get visitors looking for PSP information and not Amiga information.
