Which was you favourite (classic) Amiga model and why?

For me, it's got to be the A500.

Why? Well for starters it's the one I owned at the time (still have it in fact, although it didn't quite work right last time I tried it). It's the most famous model I think, the one that most people remember - and rightly so as it's the one that really kickstarted* everything, and got the Amiga ball* rolling.

Amiga 500 for me as well. I have the most memories from it and it had the best games. I suspect this will probably be most people's choice.

My favourite Amiga is definitly the Amiga 1200. Although I enjoyed using the Amiga 500 and have plenty of neat memories of it, the Amiga 1200 will always be *the* Amiga for me. :) I find it hard to explain why, but I just love that machine, that's all. ;)

I'm going with the 500 as well. Same as everyone, this was the model I had first and spent the most time with. All my fondest Amiga memories from back in the day is with that machine. :)

I like the A1200 because of it's ability to be expanded with faster 68ks and PPCs, but I think te A500+ is the best.

*It has socketed chips
*It is more compatible with older games/software
*You can store floppy drives and genlocks etc on top of it

I also think it just seems to be built slightly better than the A1200 as well.

For me although I started out with an Amiga 500 Plus model, my favourite Amiga has to be the A1200..for a number of reasons.

More powerful and infinitely more expandable than any other Amiga (look even what you can do with them today).

Besides gaming at the time in the early 90's I used it at university, Wordsworth was a great alternative to Microsoft Word, I much preferred Workbench 3 to Windows 3.1 at that time, gaming on the A1200 was far superior back then to the 386 pc's that were popular when the A1200 was released. It did all I needed it to do for far less cost than a pc....at least for a couple of years....

Then the downfall of Commodore, the demise of the software industry supporting it, the power of pc's and the 486 market, and the final nail in the coffin, the advent of 3D gaming, Doom and clones and the Playstation eventually killed it off, and I rather reluctantly at the time sold it and joined the PC masses.

Glad now though to have built an A1200 '040 tower.

Cicobuff, that is practically word for word how I would describe the way I used the Amiga in the 90's.

My A1200 was also my main system whilst I was at College and the first two years of University and I tried to hang on to using just the Amiga for everything as long as I could. It wasn't really until Windows 95 was released that any other platform was even coming close to the same level as Workbench.

I finally had to stop using the Amiga as a main platform as the Internet took off in 1997/8. I was specialising in multimedia and computer based graphic design for my degree and although we had a lot of G3 Macs and PCs at the University, there was no way I could have managed in the final year of my course without a computer of my own capable of running programs such as Photoshop, Director and Dreamweaver. I had to save the whole of the summer to afford a decend PC and purchased on just as Windows 98 was released.

I also remember when the other platforms were starting to overtake the Amiga just before the Playstation was released. Amiga software was starting to decline, the amount of shelf space in games stores was shrinking to make way for more console and PC games and the game stores started to heavily discount the Amiga games. :( That was a sad day, but equally a great chance to get a load of really cheap Amiga and CD32 games. :)

I couldn't afford a PC for gaming when that happened so bought a Playstation just after they came out and that worked well for playing the latest games combined with the Amiga for everything else.

As for my favourite system, it is very hard to pick just one, but I will also select the original Kickstart 1.3 based A500. I never owned one myself at the time. My first Amiga of my own was the A600, but the original A500 was responsible for the whole of the Amiga's popularity as a games machine and kickstarted the whole PD and Demo scenes.

I was close to saying the A1200 due to it's amazing expandability even today, but it doesn't quite have the magic of the original A500. There is something about the styling and look of the case that says it all. :)

Sold mu A500 Plus to buy my A1200.
So pretty much my money where my mouth is.
A1200 is far superior as the 500 was just a games machine.
Don't mean that in a negative way, it's just that I can do a lot more with my 1200 than I could with the 500 plus.

My 1200 can play Doom and a lot of the clones no problem.
Although I would need a PPC to play Heretic II.
You might want to give some of them a try.
I remember some playing pretty well with an 030, so you should be laughing with an 040

Thanks for that info, but I really meant at the time way back in 1994-5 when I owned an A1200 I couldnt afford a 040 for it back then, or even did anyone port those games back then....I sold my A1200 and bought a 486 sx40 (later upgraded to a 486 dx80) and found that adequate for Doom II, Heretic and the like back then.

Although I do enjoy a spot of retro gaming on my A1200 tower Apollo 040/40 3.1 roms running OS 3.9, I am just rebuilding now in a nice shiny new case(mounted motherboard sideways this time instead of a unprofessional custom backplate I made the first time, and also so I can utilise the pcmcia slot for networking thats sticks out the back nicely). I really dont want to revisit those other than maybe outta curiosity to see how they run. Really right now the only Amiga upgrade I want to consider is a fast IDE interface instead of the slow buffered one I have.

For me thats easy it was definately the A500 mainly because it was the only amiga i have ever used lol always wanted to try the 1200 but never got a chance ;'(

Pretty much exactly the same for me too. I used an A600 at a frinds house but that was it. The A600 was a neat looking machine, nice and compact. Would've loved an A1200 though but dodn't have the money for it then, and we switched to a PC during the Pentium phase for schoolwork (word,excel, powerpoint, encarta, printing stuff, and especially Championship Manager *ahem*).

The Amiga ports were quite a bit later compared to the originals, that is true. Doom was one of the first though and was freeware, but required the original PC WAD from the game to run. I still remember feeling quite impressed getting Doom running on an A4000 at the time.

A4000 mmm, wanted one of those for a long time.
Not the same need when i bought the 060 and tower though.

If you get one of the Elbox fast interfaces, they support DVD burning.
Very handy for backing up your hd.

Don't knw about other makes.
