I've not seen the trailer yet. Will have to track it down.
I'm questioning some of the casting decisions though. Winona Ryder as Spock's mother? Not sure about that one, but we will see. And I don't see Chris Pine as a good James T. Kirk. Karl Urban as Bones is another I need to see before being convinced. John Cho should be OK as Sulu, but Anton Yelchin as Chekov? Hmm...
At least now we know the real identity of our member Sarek! ;) Ben Cross.
See the full cast here (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/MOV/011/casts/index.html).

Casting issues aside it looks like it's going to be a Marmite film. The Origins of the crew from ST:TOS is well known in book form and it looks like this film is going to completely rewrite those origins into a more Brennon Braga friendly Trek universe (One where you can't pick so many holes in Enterprise). But i still want to see it even if it's going to make the next series of Heroes a little more difficult (Is it Sylar or is it Spock? I'm confused).
Got it. (http://www.paramount.com/startrek/)

I bet Simon Pegg had to change his underwear a few times when he found out he was playing Scotty. Probably a few times on set as well especially the first time he said "She canna take much more of this Cap'n"

I am looking forward to seeing how he plays the part. His recent films have all been great, if more comic orientated.

Just one thing to say role on Xmas 2008 :)
At least now we know the real identity of our member Sarek! Ben Cross.
He's better looking than me ;)
don't really know many of the Actors off hand but i'm sure we'll find out what they've been in etc even if i don't go looking! of course no intro needed for simon pegg.
another thing if they do the film and it's a success who of those actors is going to want to comeback to do more? like Winona Ryder etc

That is true. A couple of the actors are already stars in their own right, so would they want to maintain a reoccurring role in a number of Star Trek films? It is great to guarantee a fan base and work for years to come, but equally I expect it could impact on the types of future work they might be offered. Winona Ryder for example has taken a very diverse range of roles over the years.

But don't forget Winona Rider needs to keep working so she stays out of those shops. Remember Idle hands make light fingers.;)

Maybe she only took the role so she could use the Vulcan Deathgrip on security guards!
Buleste
24th January 2008, 13:40
Unfortunatly Winona's playing Amanda, Spock's mother who was human so they wouldn't have taught her the Vulcan Nerve pinch as they only teach it to Vulcan characters in a secret training session.

Who knows what the Vulcan mating ritual may involve... Maybe the deathgrip has a different effect on Vulcans during sex...

24th January 2008, 13:52
Ah my subtle hints failed. As a nerd i have to point out that it is the Vulcan Nerve Pinch and not deathgrip. As Vulcans are a essentially peacefull race they do not have a deathgrip or if they did it has long since been forgotten as it would be illogical.:p

MY problem is I am not a Star Trek fan... Much prefered the Amiga-assisted Babylon 5 series.
May I just say, in that case... I would rather spend time with a Narn than a Vulcan! But NOT if the Narn wants to discover my pleasure threshold!

I too prefer B5 to trek but i'm a nerd so i need to know things like Velcan Nerve pinch. I would prefer to spend my time with a Cenatauri women. Something about bald heads on women just does something for me.

Babylon 5 and Star Trek are quite different concepts of a Sci-Fi future though. Both great in their own right. Babylon 5 was for me a more realistic depiction of different cultures and interaction, but it is very hard to compare them as they are so different.

Winona Ryder is hot, so it doesn't matter who or what she plays. Preferably some race with skimpy clothing, though.

True. She is very nice. Although she looks even better when she has longer hair. ;)

wow..... i had not a clue they were going to make another movie....
I have just caugt up with this thread... and checked out the trailer.... looks promising....
however.... i was looking for a date on the cast page..... needed to know if it was an Aprill fools joke....
how can Winona be Karl Urbans mother ?
I have to admit yeah, she is cute.... but there are times (when her hair is a little to short) and she looks to much like a young boy.... personally not my thing....
that cast list is crazy... i cannot get over it..... sean pegg ?!?! i think paramount really want to put Star Trek into the bottomless pit of hell.... (the bastards!)
I love trek.... all trek, some more than others.... I love Bab5 pretty much most sci-fi I am a whore of SCI-FI to be honest....
but Paramount Ruined Season 3 of Enterprise with that god-awefull Xindi plot... and then the dared pull the plug in a fantastic season 4!!
..... I have no doubt i will be watching this movie.... good or bad to be honest... i just love trek :D

Same here. It might turn out to be the worst film ever made, but being Star Trek i will still pay to see it on the big screen.
[slight off topic rant ON]
Why are the owners of most Sci-Fi franchise so bad at realising the full potential of anything they own? Or cut it off in it's prime. Stargate, Farscape, Babylon 5, Star Trek... all of them have been treated with less respect than they deserve over the years.
And what is it with this franchise idea that they should cut a Sci-Fi show when it is at it's ultimate high? Or not even give a show enough tie to develop?
Journeyman is a great example at the moment. Who else has been watching this? It's coming to the end of it's 12 episode run and it's getting really good. And yet it has been cancelled! I would go as far as saying it is better than Dead Zone (although I do also like that), but the latter has seen 6 series to date, and Journey mad is cut after just 12 episodes. Mad!

Is Journeyman made by Fox by any chance??? Fox are great at creating superb series but even better at cutting them off in their prime because they don't get as many viewers as their "reality" shows this is because you need more than two brain cells to watch the good shows which rules out most of Fox's viewers. Firefly was one of the best sci-fi shows ever and fox killed it after 14 episodes, so they make a film of it (Serenity) using Universal and it was one of the biggest grossing films of that year. The problem with most Sci-Fi shows is that they are a niche audience. So whilst they will never have the viewing figures of other shows they make up for it in merchandise and DVD sales. Something that networks forget.
B5 is one of the few shows that made it to the end of it's run. Although every year it was threatened to be cancelled (Thats why the last episode in season 4 was so bad and the Telepath war was so short in Season 5)

Journeyman is actually made my 20th Century Fox. From reading viewers opinions of the series on other forums, many didn't like it because the main character looked too much like the one from Dead Zone. Mad reason not to like a series in my view. Others because it was too similar to the idea of Quantum Leap. A guy jumping back through time to help others. Again mad reason not to like something!
Personally I think the concept of Journeyman was great. Even if it did steal many of it's ideas from the book, The Time Travellers Wife.
And introducing the concept that there were many with the ability to jump between their present time and the past and future could so easily have been expanded into so much more had it been given more time to evolve.
I'm actually wondering if it was canceled due to the current writers strike? With such good writers it could have continued well.
Actually writers is a big issue which I think causes a lot of problems and makes a series fall from popularity. Look at Star Gate SG-1 as a good example of this. The first few series used a similar method as Star Trek did. Getting different writers to write all the episodes. This keep stores fresh and interesting. The first couple of series did this in SG1 and it created variety and interest, with you not knowing what each episode would bring. But then they brought in a couple of in house writers who wrote everything. This quickly made many episodes feel formulaic and obviously from the same writers. Worlds started to all look the same. Everything started to converge into the same continuing story each week. And when things were started to get very interested at the end of the final series what happened? They cancelled the show! OK they do have two DVD films coming out this year (second is on hold due to writers strike though) but still. Mad.

The date of 05/08/09 is the scheduled date for the new movie or to the rest of the world the 8th May 2009 (Normal people go dd/mm/yy but no, the yanks have to be different). The new trailer can be found here. (http://www.startrekmovie.com/)

I've always wondered why yanks always put addresses backwards. Anyone know the reason? Definitely confuses when dates are written like that and the month or date could represent either value. They should be forced to conform.
Only 6 months to go then to the new film. :)

About date order, when you think about it, both us in the UK and the US are wrong. It should be Year/Month/Day, so things get orderly as recognized by computers.
For instance, 20081114 is greater than 20081025 when sorted by a computer. Put the day first in a file name and it all goes wrong!
Well, ok, I'll admit Day/Month/Year does read better for us humans.
Anyway, Star Trek XI. It looks from the trailer like a reboot of the franchise rather than a continuation. Kind of makes sense to me as a non-cannon die hard fan. The old films weren't pulling in the numbers so they've gone for a new and fresh approach to draw in casual viewers.
I must say, the new CGI Enterprise looks very strange. I don't like it anywhere near as much as the original Motion picture model version.
What do you lot think:

Although that isn't the new Enterprise. That's the one everyone mistakes as the new Enterprise, although I think I like that design better!

Where is the Enterprise in the picture above from then? I also thought that was the one as that image and a couple of others have been posted on a few different sites.
The official trailer looks great and I'm now really looking forward to the film's release. I am still unsure about a couple of the actors they have picked though, but I'm trying to reserve judgment on that until I've seen the film.

The one I posted is the same one as in the trailers. I can't remember who did the other one. They are clearly different however.
I actually like this design the best so far; it looks the same or similar to the one in Buleste's post:
