The older we get, the quicker time does seem to fly by. Almost to the point where it becomes a fast & slippery slope. It's not fun getting old though. Mind willing, body not able. I'm fitter than most for my age but there is such a lot I can't do now, but still want to. Annoying to say the least. :eyebrow:

I don't really rant about much these days but I have a real ffs that needs venting & it involves Google Chrome.
I'm fully aware of the advertising scams & pop-up's that still go on, but for crying out loud @ the random adverts based on what you might have been looking whilst surfing eBay etc. I'm talking about beeing somewhere like www.speedtest.org and seeing pictures of recently viewed items on eBay.....
They are configureable within some other web based front end of Chrome, yet such a lot require you sod off to some other site leaving you wondering what cookies & other bullshit are being spewed onto your computer whilst doing so?
It's at the point now where my Pee-Cee is just going to be used for Gaming only & will be investing in an iMac for other online interests.
The internet is almost becoming an infection in it's own right & I can only see it getting worse before it gets better.

How will the iMac help? Apple are the worst of them all for spying on their users and collecting their activity data. Also just because you are using a Mac doesn't stop malware and browser targeted adverts.

How about using Firefox or Opera? Or maybe Lynx?:shades:
I haven't used Safari for years but I never used to like the PC version. The Macintosh version seemed fine though.
I find Opera is great at blocking things like ads. I forget the name of the file it uses, but I have mine filled with loads of unwanted addresses which result in ads being blocked. Its really easy to unblock stuff if necessary, and its also easy to enable/disable plugins and javascript when required as well.
Is an iMac really worth the expense just for internet stuff?

I want to rant about the overuse of abbreviations which (in my experience) seems to be very common recently. I found this topic here does a reasonably good job: http://www.foolsdesign.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=196
I'm not talking about commonly used internet abbreviations, like the ones Kin used in the above post, but less common ones which tend to be used where you don't expect them and where people (me included) won't understand them.
I sometimes end up reading documents which really should have a glossary attached (but often omit this).
I was reading through a document I found on the internet about a local radio station the other day and it referred to the abbreviations SW, AM, and MS. I immediately thought of Short Wave, Morning, and Multiple Sclerosis, but it turned out they were actually just people's initials.
On the subject of these MSs, when I was at college, I was reading meeting minutes which kept explaining that certain things were to be done by an MS. I kept thinking to myself, what the hell is an MS? Apart from Multiple Sclerosis, the only thing that springs to mind is Microsoft. It took me most of the year to figure out that this 'MS' is actually the initials of the director of higher education :huh2:. There was another document which I got from college which I'm sure they wrote by using some random character generator.
Surely I can't be the only person who has trouble with abbreviations?
- - - Updated - - -
Another rant for today.
I'm getting a bit fed up of people who seem to lack skills in both typing and spelling. I've recently been chatting with someone who seems to lack both a ' key and a . key, and misspells practically every word. His communication really is rather difficult to read. I would post a quote but I don't want to break any confidentiality.
This seems rather common, and I'm sure its getting worse these days.
There's also the issue of people who try and let their computers write for them, which seems to result in people saying things which are wrong, or don't make sense .

I often fall into the trap of predictive text on here and other forums due to using a tablet a lot to post and it's predictive swipe typing being a bit to smart for its own good and trying to predict what you are writing, and not always noticing every work it inserts wrongly.
Anyway, regarding acronyms.. I totally agree. At Royal Mail (RM) they use a lot of them and some you would never guess unless told, and even then you might be left clueless as to their actual meaning. A great example is UTR.. we started to receive red sleeved yorks of packets from DOs (Distribution Offices) with red UTR labels on them a couple of years ago.. After asking various managers I finally discovered it meant Under the Roof.. but that still meant nothing to me.. until I spoke to some more people and uncovered that UTR meant another RM office had pre-cut, tipped and sorted the work being sent as UTR, so it didn't need to be processed and could bypass the initial process within the distribution centre and by moved directly to the next stage, speeding up the process. But UTR or Under the Roof is still a very strange name to give it IMO.

Do you manage OK typing on tablets? I've only done it a few times and I didn't get on with it too well, but they are big enough for a full qwerty keyboard, so I don't see the need for predictive text.
As for abbreviations, I have a document in the loft called 'DWP Corporate Abbreviations' (from the Department for Work and Pensions). It is a very long document. I should post it here just for the fun of it.

Tablets and phones predict the words the same way and sometimes it can waste time when it refuses to accept a word being typed.
Typing on a tablet or phone is so slow compared to a real keyboard.
I do like swype typing though. Have you tried it? You need to know a qwerty keyboard well to utilise it more easily, but it can be much faster.

Just seen an interesting way of distributing viruses. Instead of the usual zipped SCR files, which I often get, this time I got a zipped SHTML file, which loaded a website up in an iframe, and redirected to Google Docs which downloaded the SCR file :ninja:.
Harrison
31st July 2015, 13:17
Really. I don't think I've ever had an SCR file download. What and where are you downloading?
And never open attachments to dodgy looking emails. Any professional organisation will never attach a file directly to an email for things like bank forms, or links to specific logins. They always tell you to visit their site and log into your account yourself. If you don't know what it is, then don't download or open it.
Stephen Coates
31st July 2015, 14:16
I get quite a lot of emails with zipped SCR files. Usually it is an email formatted to look like it ought to be genuine, with an attachment like genuine_sounding_document.zip, which contains genuine_sounding_document.txt.scr.
But this one was curious as the zip file contained genuine_sounding_document.shtml, which contained only a link to another website.
Of course, as a GNU/Linux user, I have no idea what these executable files do, and I usually just delete them. I'm assuming they are Windows viruses.
Harrison
1st August 2015, 00:19
SCR files are screensavers, and they put malware inside them, so if people did open the SCR files they install the screensaver, then when the computer next goes into screensaver mode it launches the malware with it.

I'm quite pissed off at the moment, because I'm sick. Last Saturday my throat started hurting, nothing to worry about, took some medication, didn't get better, so Monday morning I went to the doctor. Got antibiotics straight away, 3 days off work, and some other stuff, well done, thought in 2 days you'll be fine.
It just got worse, by Wednesday, I couldn't swallow anymore, it hurts so badly, never had that before plus I have all the time 39 fever. So I went back to the doctor, who changed then the antibiotics to a different one, pills against fever and I did a blood test. Plus I also have now a fungus on my tongue.
Called him on Thursday morning, and he told me that he was right the second time, that it was no mononucleosis, but bacteria infection with streptococcus type A, so the antibiotics should help.
Well I can tell you, it's still not better, I have a very hard time swallowing the pills, I didn't eat anything since Monday, and I spit into a bucket every 30 seconds because I cannot even swallow my saliva. I can't sleep, and this morning I was close to puking, as I think taking all the time the antibiotics on a raw stomach is not the best.
The throat pain is almost unbearable and I really hope I will see some progress soon. Today seems to be 5-10% better, not a lot, but that gives me hope.

The fungus on your tongue could be Thrush. Eat Yoghurt to help naturally, though I do believe there are oral Thrush solutions available too. - Being unwell in this manner can leave your gut short of healthy bacteria & thrush is usually the end result for this. Antibiotics also strip your gut of healthy bacteria too.
Another way to prove Thrush, is to not wash your cock for 24/48 hrs. If you start to develop cheese, that's Thrush for ya! :eyebrow:
If you are cheesing up down there, get some canesten cream. Google is your best friend or your Doc of course. ;)

Day 6, and at the moment, it seems to be at least a bit better, swallowing still hurts, but is already better, I can manage to drink 3 sips of water. Since yesterday I also take vitamin pills, as I don't eat at all yet, thus getting no vitamins at all. Guess my body is quite out of minerals.
But I don't yell out yet, as it's still bad, and yesterday I had a bit the same feeling, and during the afternoon, the whole shit got worse again. Fever is also still there, have to see how that goes.

Day 7.
Throat seems to be a bit better, was about time, at least I can swallow at the moment, so I can drink water
I think that 6 days without eating start to show, I feel very weak, and also dizzy at times. Sweating a lot, and also being tired almost all of the time. Fever is almost gone, at least not so high anymore. Fungus seems also to be almost gone, although now I have my whole mouth full of abscess, which also kinda hurts.
Perhaps I will manage to eat something tomorrow, that would be great. I'm going back to the doctor tomorrow morning anyway, because I don't feel like start working tomorrow already.

Day 8.
Throat is better, can drink, although drinks with bubbles hurt, have to drink them slowly.
Went to the doc today again, and he wrote me also this week off, so I have time to recover.
Gonna try to eat something later, went to the scale at the doc's, lost 8kg!!
Will continue my antibiotics until tomorrow, then they're finished.

It doesn't seem to get really better, no real progress. Yesterday evening I ate a bit of pasta and fish, was ok. Still feeling weak, quite weird. I just hope this will be better again at some point. At least I drink quite a lot now, and I'm taking my vitamin pills every day.

You are to long with no proper food, you cannot be better after 2 days of eating something man.
15 days ago i eat something really fuxxx up and got a gastroenteritis, i went to the WC 15 times in 4 hours, man, i got the color of a brand new A1200.
It was 15 days ago, and i still fell my intestine and stomach screaming. I am on diet, looks like for ages... the recovery is being really slow.
What you got, was far worst i guess, not able to swallow and a lot of days without eating. Your stomach must need a lot f time to get better.
Did your doctor said to divide your daily food for a bigger number of meals? I got a friend that had something similar and we was eating very few each time, but he did it every hour. He even wake up in the middle of the night to eat. Very few each time, but that was good for recovering faster. But his bacteria was only in stomach as i remember.

True. But seeing them from time to time is fine, don't mind visiting them in Finland, but having them here, at your own place is different. I have to admit that I'm a very pedantic person too, everything organized, and now, all of a sudden, everything is a bit messy. I would raise my children differently, but I won't blame them, everybody IS different. I don't mind if they cause 'havoc' at their place, but please not here. It's not about the running around and crying so much, but I guess you get my point.
Still 4 more days to go, and tomorrow they'll leave early as they wanna visit some castles here. Weather got slightly better, only 50% rain precipitation. Still shit weather for this time, even in Luxembourg.
Btw, my girlfriend really wants to have children, already since long time, I never wanted, and this isn't helping me, because now, she wants them even more.
Her plan is, to have this boy of the older sister, one in the plans from the younger sister, and then our own, growing up together and eventually play for Finland ice hockey national team together :)

I understand some people don't want children and I respect that. However I think it is a huge issue in a relationship when one really does want children and the other doesn't. It will always endup with some resentment.
I also think it's a recent generational issue because our generation and younger have had a lot more than previous generations, which has led us to be more selfish. Especially with more people remaining single into their 30s+. They already have their house, job and social lives set out and are fairly happy with how it's all setup. And the idea of that all being disrupted by having a child isn't so much a scary thought, but more a huge disruption to the bachelor lifestyle. Knowing you would have to give up some, if not a lot of your creature comforts, as well as personal space, to accomodate a child.
This is very different to our parents era where most started out with very little, and got married fairly young and got their first house together. Building their life as a family from the beginning and developing their adult life around that. It's very different to develop an adult life first and then try to alter it later to share it with someone else. That's modern society for you.
Personally I always wanted children, but was also a bit selfish in not wanting to alter my freedom to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. But to get around that we started out by getting a new house together, so it was a fresh start. Moving into a partner's existing house is never ideal because you always feel you are living in their house, by their rules. It's not your own because you didn't put a stamp on that house together. And with a new house you can then consider there will be children at some point from the start. Not having to alter everything later.
I did always want children, but was never that comfortable around other people's. Never knowing what to say to them. But having your own is very different. It's impossible to say until you do. I still hate most other children, but being a father is an amazing thing.

I sent a letter to a public sector organisation whom I consider 'unreliable'. They insist that they didn't receive it, so I filled in the lost mail claim form on Royal Mail's website to claim back the 58p that I spent on the 2nd Class stamp to send said letter.
I wonder if they'll cough up.

Well, much to my amazement, I just got in the post, a book of six first class stamps worth £4.02. Not bad considering I only claimed for 58p.

Has anyone seen those stupid adverts from the army trying to recruit 'phone zombies' and 'snowflakes' etc?
I saw some in Sheffield yesterday. Someone had modified the posters from 'Your Army needs you' to 'Your Army will kill you' and 'Your Army will rape you'.
But regarding the adverts in general, do we really want to rely on someone faffing about with a cell phone to protect us when other countries are dropping bombs on us?

Many wars are not on the ground any longer, but online. We therefore need alternative methods to locate and combat threats.
But we do still need a real army it's true. I think the adverts were a tongue in cheek attempt to suggest they should give up wasting their time on their phones and social media, and join the army instead.

You're almost there Harrison..... Pah @ Brexit dammit....
Our Ace was No Deal, never mind "No Deal" from the start.....

No more delays, Just get out. - Instill National Service to all School leavers, learn a Trade & lets all make Great Britain "Great" again.

(Political Brexit rant warning)
The hilarious thing is how much the EU have completely contradicted themselves this week now that the threat of no deal is starring them in the face.
First the threat that we will still have to pay £39 Billion if we leave with no deal. Really? How are they going to enforce that then? The EU army they all ensured us two years ago was never gong to happen? But according to both Macron and Merkel is now suddenly coming along nicely.
Or how about now if there is no deal the EU have technology and other means to track movement within Ireland so there will be no need for a hard border with NI! Really? Only last week they said there was no solution to the NI border other than the backstop stitchup, or a hard border.
And now with no deal businesses won't need to worry about border queues at the French or UK borders as they will be able to function as before.
And finally UK citizens will be able to travel to the EU without a visa.
Wow! So that nearly dismisses every scaremongering remainer argument they ever use to argue Brexit should be reversed.
And therefore what's the issue? We leave with no deal and can enjoy visa free travel, frictionless borders, no need for a hard NI border etc.. great, no deal it is then!
But what are our joke of a parliament still trying to do? Push through May's remainer stitchup deal to lock us forever into the EU without any say in our future relationship.

I just came back from a short holiday to find a card from Hermes lodged in the door, stating 'Parcel in green bin'. I looked in my green bin, and indeed there was a parcel there.
Its addressed to our address, but to someone whom we've never heard of. Any idea what I should do with it? If I'd been in when the courier called I could have refused it. I can't really drop it back in the post like I could if it was Royal Mail.
Fortunately though there is a return address on the parcel, so I could contact the sender.

What company is it from? You could contact them directly to report it was addressed wrongly. It's their responsibility to come and collect it as it's their mistake. There might also be a packing slip inside with the right address?
Stephen Coates

There was no indication as to the intended recipient. I think it was from a private individual.
I sent it by parcelforce back to the stated return address, complete with an invoice for the postage cost.

Well I got Herpe'd some weeks back....
Returned some items to Amazon via a Local McColl's shop on the 12/03/19 & Hermes were the Courier doing the pickup.
Amazon received the return @ their Holdings Address on the 26/03/19.... Two frickin weeks dammit....
I could have strapped it to the back of a Stray Dog & probably got a quicker result. :eyebrow:

That is some delay. My only guess is such a company send returns back via palette and it only gets shipped once a full palette is filled. You see Amazon returns pallets for sale online because Amazon don't actually want the hassle of processing the items.

14th April 2019, 23:12
Not entirely sure that's correct Harrison....It certainly wasn't a Pallet @ the McColl's shop, that's for sure.
I've sent two returns to Amazon since & used Royal Fail, ....cough..... Mail.....
Dropped off @ 11.40am on the way to work & by 2.30pm, had an Email from Amazon saying my refund was in process. :o
Two day's later, I had another Email saying they had received my return & had refunded my account. - The money showed 3 day's later!
Impressive. :yesyes:

Really? Seems counterintuitive at first but I guess keeping happy and returning customers is more valuable than time spent (therefore wage cost) on processing minor things.
Still, what a crazy world we live in sometimes, eh?

If you look on YouTube there are some whom make a living from these return palettes and film unboxing them. There is a lot of junk included but these people seem to sell it at places like car boots and market stalls so work involved to get their money back.

I've seen quite a few 'Recommended' videos crop up on YouTube with titles like "Amazon returns pallet unboxing". Don't think I've ever watched one, but I have seen such pallets for sale.
I can certainly understand why they would want to just get rid of low-value returns like that.
Harrison
28th April 2019, 22:55
Exactly, especially if the packaging has been broken, opened or items used. More hassle than the amount they could hope to get reselling as open box or B grade as they would need to employ someone to check, repackage, write reports etc.

Royal Mail refund time again.
379 days ago I sent a complaint letter to an unreliable private business. Recently they revealed that they never received it . I attempted to put a claim in on Royal Mail's website but it said you can only claim up to 80 days after the item was posted.
I guess that will save Harrison and co some stamps.

I bought a Rode Lavalier Go microphone from Amazon. It arrived earlier, and I got an email saying:
Hi Stephen,
Your parcel has been posted through your letterbox.
How was your delivery?
It was great
Not so great
Do they really expect me to provide feedback on the process of pushing an envelope through a door?
Anyway, I've tested the microphone with my Sony Minidisc recorder and it works nicely. It doesn't work properly on either of my Sony camcorders though. Once its plugged in, the camcorder keeps randomly switching between internal and external microphone.

Well, my Rant & a bit of a change in Topic direction is....
After having the AstraZeneca Jab last Thursday afternoon after work, it seriously F'king Floored me!
Every Injury my body has ever suffered in my life paid me an unwelcome re-visit on Friday morning. - I could barley move & just wanted to sleep. Sleep was easy despite feeling like someone had sledge hammered a metal plate right though my skull at eyeball level....
Thankfully, I felt better on Saturday & this morning, I'm just dealing with coughing some shit up here & there.
Deb's had the Pfizer variant about three weeks ago & didn't react anything like I have with the Oxford variant. - Thankfully, all Deb had was a tender left arm from shoulder to elbow.
Still, it's done now & just have to wait 12 weeks for part two. Hopefully, it wont leave me feeling like the first part did! :hmmm:

That sucks. Please let us know how you get on with the second one.
I gather some amount of illness is normal with vaccines. However, it can be enough to put you off. Last time I had a vaccine (some years ago), I was very ill for the rest of the day. That really helped to put me off vaccines.
I'm a bit stuck with the coronavirus vaccine. On one hand, I don't want it because I don't consider the disease dangerous enough to warrant having a rushed out vaccine. On the other hand, I know enough conspiracy theorists who talk crap about vaccines that I think I should get it just to prove them wrong :D.

You don't consider it dangerous? Sorry Steve but you need a reality check. Your attitude is the reason we have seen over 125k people die from Covid here.
Where I work a woman's husband became seriously ill with it and was hospitalised. She then developed it and became hospitalised too. Whilst both of them were seriously ill her father died from Covid. Her husband then went down hill and she had to say good bye to him by zoom before he also died! She is still in hospital. This is no joke, but so many in this country still think it is. I'm not laughing!

It might not necessarily be dangerous to you Steve; but to an elderly relative, to a friend with a weak immune system, to the guy in the shop undergoing chemo, to those simply unlucky enough to be extremely susceptible.... it could be incredibly dangerous.
Get the vaccination Steve. Everyone get the vaccination.

Both my parents and my wife's mum have all received their first vaccines and have dates in April to recieve their second. My wife has also had her first one about 3 weeks ago.

They are really slow here, only in phase 2 out of 6 so far, I'm probably in 6, perhaps 5, cannot remember. My father got the AstraZeneca and has now to wait 70 days, until the 1st of June to get his second.
Is your wife older than you, or why did she already receive it?

She's got quite bad asthma and really bad arthritis, so is classed as clinically extremely vaunerable. Therfore she was offered the vaccination ahead of others.
She's also can't got into work until April as she had a letter from the government telling her she had to stay home and self shield. So she's doing remote video teaching 1 to 1 with some of the children struggling the most. Plus she's doing planning, zoom meetings, filling out grant applications etc.. She's actually busier then if she were in she teaching.

Linked In
I'm a retired & private kind of guy on the Internet. Quite simply can't stand Social Media sites like Face Book, Tweet etc & made a terrible mistake recently with this shower of Sh!t....
Some years ago, five to be precise, I bought a beautiful Vertagear Chair (https://www.vertagear.com/products/triigger-line-350-special-edition-gaming-chair). This is a $1000 chair to buy these days.
The recline function packed up & is covered under warranty & I made a claim on December 3rd 2022. - Lots of Emails later & even a DPD Tracking number for the replacement parts back in March this year & I'm still waiting!
They have contacted me again a while back telling me they can't provide the parts (No sh!t Sherlock, it's a whole new chair because of how it's designed) & you said you would look into another solution for me. (Now nearly 3 months ago)
Thank you so Much Vertager Europe!
In a desperate effort, I joined Linked In & attempted to get a conversation started with one of their Design Engineers in the USA, Leo DW Jung. Have been away a week or so having my lower Jaw set with Implants & new teeth so now whilst on the mend, tried chasing this up.
Linked In wanted to verify who I was.
1) Select the upright Dog from the nine Boxes! - Check
2) Select the Country you are from! - Check
3) Upload your Passport, Photo ID or your Driving Licence. We will delete this once you have! - Oh Fu*k off please & I hope you bollocks fester in the corners.
Really???
I had a similar event logged into Google on my Works account two weeks ago. I'm an O.J.T. in my Logistics Company (On Job Trainer) & whilst logged into our training Academy, clicked on a link that normally shows a Video in the Academy interface. No, this one was just showing a link for the video, but when clicking it, it automatically generated me a free Vimeo account!
Much arsing around with our internal I.T. sector & requesting Vimeo to delete my account immediately, Vimeo responded with you will need to enter your Password to delete the Account!
Well that's clever pal, cos I didn't enter jack to get your BS free account setup, whilst you helped yourself using my Business credentials in the first place. - Just how stupid do you think I am?
On top of this, the head honcho from our I.T. said if I felt this was a breach of GDPR, then I should write to another Department within our Business. I won't be back into work until Monday 23rd October to find out if there is any development on this. I'm hoping the head honcho's head is on a stick @ Central Office tbh.
What a proper Dick!
Rants over! :ninja:
