I currently have a GVP A500-HD8 Hard drive for my a500

I have seen a commodore 590 hard drive for sale which is better? Does the 590 work on a a1200? As the gvp is only for the a500.

Thanks

David

An A590 will not work on an A1200, as it plugs into the slot at the side of the A500, which the A1200 does not have.

As Steve said, all A500 HD units will only work on the A500 and A500+ as they use the side bus expansion that is only found on that model.

As for your question about which of the two is better, the GVP unit is better and more reliable, and is a version of the larger HC+8 Zorro card often found in big box Amigas. I have a GVP 2000 HC+8 in my A4000 for example.

The GVP unit should also support the addition of up to 8MB of fast ram using 30pin simms. And it should also have an external SCSI port at the rear which allows for more external devices to be connected too.

The A600 and A1200 instead have a PCMCIA slot which is the same as found on laptops and there are many expansions you can buy to add devices to the A1200 and A600. An external HD that connects to this and looks much like the A500 HDs was made by Archos and I have one of these I used to use with my A1200, and now with my A600. You can also get the A1200/600 Squirrel SCSI interface that connects to this port and allows you to connect external HD, CD-Rom, Zip drive etc.

He he, I had 1 of these bad boys back in the day. The others are correct, it will only work with the A500 and A500+ due to the side expansion slot.

A590 (20 MB HD) I felt like a GOD!!!! :)

I think they also work on the A1000 as this has the same slot as the 500, but it is on the wrong side, so you have to have the 590 the wrong way round.

I'm sure I remember reading about some A500 side bus expansions working on the A1000, but you have to have an A1000 running Kickstart 1.3 and have the ram upgraded. I may be wrong, but I also seem to remember reading that the bus is also upside down so to use the expansions you actually have to remove them from their cases.
