I thought we should have a topic where we can post photos of all our amigas.

Here is a photo of my A500+, without 56k modem, which i took recently with my Kodak Star EF camera (which isn't very good)(URLs are subject to change):

http://www.emaculation.com/steve/a500.jpg

The photo shows the A500+, with the HD, Cumana disk drive, Microtext, and 8833-II monitor. The Amstrad DMP2000 is under the desk. The HP DeskJet is in the airing cupboard behind the desk and the Goodmans video recorder which gets used as a TV tuner for the 8833 is on the floor in front of the draws. I will take a better photo with the digital camera later.

My A1200 was set up like this earlier this year. It is currently in the loft unused. I don't think I had the CDRW drive connected in this photo but when I have had it connected in the past it went behind the A1200. The thing sticking out of the side is a PCMCIA ethernet card. the monitor is an Amiga Technologies 1438S. the Power supply is an modified ATX one. This is located on the shelf above the printer. The Canon IP4000 is not connected to the Amiga.

Now lets see everyone elses :)

My not-currently-working A600:

(Note the bashed F2 key - a scar of the gravity-induced disk drive breakage)

I'll have to take a photo of my (working) A1200 some other time.

I've been meaning to do some photographs of my Amigas. I will see if I can this week and post some images.

BTW, Steve, I think you need a bigger desk! And how come you're not using the A1200 at the moment? Looks like you had it set up nicely before.

Stephen Coates
24th September 2007, 12:52
I am not using the A1200 now, because I had to remove it from that desk in order to put the PC there (I needed to use the PC), but now I have the television and video recorder on that desk and have no where for the PC (it is currently sitting on the floor). And i don't use the A1200 much.

The only other options for having the PC set up properly would be if I moved it onto a desk in the loft (which I was planning to do but decided I couldn't be bothered), or I could get an LCD monitor and put it on my other desk (which I like to reserve for the lapto and writing, so I can't put my big trinitron there).

The HD for the A500+ takes up too much room on the desk. What I could do with is some sort of cable so i can have the HD connected to the A500+, but I could then put the HD somewhere else, like on the floor, so it isn't taking up space on the desk.

This is my Amiga set-up
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z169/v85rawdeal/DSCF0498.jpg

It has an original commodore mouse (still working, with heavy duty ball), and a rather classy (albeit not Amiga related) Carmageddon mouse mat. It is connected to the tv through my DVD recorder as it is easier than unplugging the Wii to play on my Amiiga (did ya see what I did there?) Lurking just behind the Amiga is my PS3, and down the bottom is the Xbox. The hifi can also be connected up and would be blasting out about 150w of cool Amiga tunes.

Am currently experimenting with the Amiga set-up to fully take advantage of the TV's capacity (must work out how to get Amiga running under progressive scan :hmmm:) but primarily to fully take advantage of the widescreen setting. Please note, there is nothing wrong with the cables, my colour scheme is that sucky!

BTW, I probably never mentioned before, but I still have the original box for my A4000. ;)

2 weeks ago Zyriax sold his 4000T for 1.500€ at eBay, quite a nice price. He's selling some of his collection, already sold a lot of stuff. Is that because he's gf lives with him now?? I wanted his A600, but he tested it the WE, and it won't boot anymore, the screen stays black, and the HDD is doing nothing. Have to ask what he's still selling/giving away.

Harrison
8th October 2007, 19:55
That could just be a fault PSU with the A600.

The screen is not ALL black, it's very dark but you can see something in the background, the A600 has power.

Finally! Here is my Amiga set up:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2240/1568089588_eabd413a37.jpg?v=0
A1200 with original commodore installed 128MB hard drive running Workbench 3.1
Connected to Sony Bravia KDL 40W2000 with RGB Scart cable
Playstation 3 and Wii in background beside 50W Active subwoofer
Sony 5.1 cinema surround amp with 50W central speaker
Bowers and Wilkins 704 floor standing speakers front L&R channels
Bowers and Wilkins 303 Standmount speakers rear L&R channels

Only downside is that the RGB cable has L&R Sterio built in but the cable for this is about 30cm long! What the hell kind of use is that? So im gonna have to find a female to male Sterio cable extension before I can plug it in properly to the amp ( I can do this now but the Amiga has to sit on the floor to reach).

I was gonna change the amp but I think Ill wait until some HDMI 1.3 receivers come out with digital radio at a reasonable price. Then I guess Ill upgrade the centre speaker to a B&W HTM7 cos my one gets a bit drowned out by the 704's.

Heres a photo of Zool running on it:

Ooooh, I like those speakers, very nice. That's a pretty cool set up you have there.

Don't bother getting a female-male phono extension cable, just get some RCA 'couplers' (they're probably about 99p) and another long phono lead (you've probably got one laying about in a bag or a box full of hi-fi and AV spare pieces). It's what I did and for that sort of output it's fine.

Workbench 1.3 was a bit more colourful with the the blue background and so on. Are you thinking of using some of the old icons as well?

toomanymikes

Yeah, it seems a bit too clinical with the newer setup. Older style icons would be cool

Puni/Void

There might be a package available featuring a wide variety of WB 1.3 icons. Maybe you can find something like that through Aminet.

Harrison

Yeah, it seems a bit too clinical with the newer setup. Older style icons would be cool

The default WB2+ colour scheme is definitely very bland, although equally the older 1.3 one is quite sickly, although it is instantly recognised as being the Amiga.

Have you also considered a premade Workbench package such as BloodWych's ClassicWB packs? http://classicwb.abime.net/ These instantly give you access to lots of icon packs that look great, as well as colour schemes and many utilities.

That is truly a most impressive set-up, Mike, especially as it is all neat and tidy and not cluttered like mine :notworthy:

I especially like the contrasting colours that seem to blend together to make a nice ensemble of colour, age and function.

Which leads to a great idea for a sequel to Yie Ar Kung Fu:- Yie Ar Feng Shui

Thanks buddy. It takes seven years of Uni education to pick colours like that! Actually it takes 4 coats of very expensive paint before you make your mind up to go with the first one you liked - I dread to think of how much dead weight I have added to those walls...

I have in this web iste some pictures of my A1200.
i take this photos for harrison use in main site.
Still have to take the ones to make the HD change guide (i dont forget Harrison)

the website is in Portuguese but you will easily find the photos. It has also some really basic info about the Amigas, i hope that in future i can redirect some traffic from Portugal and Brazil, but it will take time, this is just a text info site. I have also photos of my Marklin Rail Sytem, that i am starting to build.

OK, as promised here finally are some pictures of my Amiga collection (most of it).

I was tidying up today so had to pull out a lot of my boxed Amiga's so thought I would arrange them quickly and take some pictures.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/All_2.jpg

A couple of shots of them all together.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/A500_12.jpg

This is one of the early Amiga A500's with a Kickstart 1.2 rom and made in Germany. Notice the large full sized Return key and the C= key instead of the left Amiga key. This one is still in very good condition with very little yellowing and still has the original box with inserts, manuals and disks. It also has a 512K trap door expansion.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/A500_13.jpg

This is an A500 with Kickstart 1.3 and a 512K trap door ram expansion. It's quite yellow as you can see, but works perfectly. The box it is sitting on is actually for the other KS1.2 A500 pictured above.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/A600.jpg

Here is my little A600, complete with box, inserts and all manuals and disks, plus it also has am A601 1MB chip ram trap door expansion fitted. With the ram expansion's original box also seen here in perfect condition.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/A1200.jpg

Here is one of my 2 A1200's seen here sitting on it's original box, which includes all the inserts, manuals and original disks. The Floppy Disk Drive sitting on the A1200 is a Power Computing 1.76MB XL Floppy Drive. This A1200 has a 1.3GB 3.5" Internal HD and a 4MB trap door ram expansion.

The other A1200 isn't pictured here as it's currently in bits as I'm fitting a 10GB 2.5" HD to it, and it also has a Blizzard 68030 accelerator and 32MB of ram.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/A4000.jpg

Here is my A4000. It hasn't discoloured much at all except for the 5.25" drive bay cover which has gone quite yellow. You can see the external drives connected to the A4000 sitting on top of it. These are a Power Computing Dual Floppy Drive unit, a SCSI Pioneer external 4x CD-Rom drive, and a SCSI Zip drive, both connected via a GVP Zorro SCSI card. The A4000 also has the full 16MB Fast ram installed and a 1.3GB HD.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/A4000_2.jpg

Another view of the A4000 plus drives.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/CD32.jpg

My CD32. The box is in the loft, but is in perfect condition.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/overdrive.jpg

Here is an external 340MB Arcos Overdrive Harddrive. I originally bought this just after my first A1200 and used it as the main HD. I then upgraded the A1200 with an internal 1.3GB HD and then used this external drive with my A600, which it is still used for now.

http://www.amiga.me.uk/off_site_images/My_Amigas/All_3.jpg

Another shot of them all together. You can also see a selection of the Amiga joysticks I have, plus some more external floppy disk drives and mice.

Obviously none of my Amigas are setup. I just connect them up when I use them, and then pack them away after. I wish I had the space to have them all setup. There was once a time when I did have the lot all setup and running on a huge long purpose built split level desk, but I don't have the space to do that any longer.

I haven't included everything from my collection in these images, just the main Amigas. I will try and do some images of my software collection and monitors later.

Quite yellow?! That's quite possibly the most discoloured Amiga I ever saw! Have you tried cleaning it, or do you prefer to keep it like that as a sort of trophy?

Harrison
6th November 2007, 16:57
 This was how it arrived from ebay! That is my £1.66 Amiga! ;)

If you look at the top right area of the case around the big AMIGA logo you can see the case isn't discoloured at all, and that area is roughly the shape of a floppy drive, so I assume the original owner has one resting on there.

I had tried cleaning the case, and you might be shocked to learn that it was actually a lot more discoloured and dirty compared to now, when I first received it. It took me a couple of hours with some kitchen cleaner to get all the grim off of it, so now it is just the case being very yellow. I may try Stu's painting method to make it look nicer.

But as I mentioned it does work perfectly well.

Tiago
6th November 2007, 17:07
Usually the keyboard is more yellow then the rest, but in your case is the opposite !

Harrison
6th November 2007, 17:12
With the older A500's the plastic was different and the cases tended to discolour quite badly over time, whereas the A600 and A1200 use different plastic so the cases don't tend to discolour much, but the keys do.

Strange how some Amiga's are badly effected by discolouration, whereas others aren't.

Many cool photos in this thread? Will have to take some pics of my A1200 and CD32 soon as well. :)

And Harrison.. that A500 looks horrible.. it seems to me like the previous owner was a big cigarette smoker. Imagine how many of those cigs he had to smoke to get be able to achieve that disgusting colour!

Btw.. Sure you can't see any whiter spots where an ashtray could have been located? I remember others who used to have their ashtrays on top of the A500, as the top was so nice and flat.

When thinking about it, it must have costed a fortune in cigs as well to get it all covered up. :D

Harrison

Is that a switch between the green and black wires?

I ought to have put a switch on my power wires. I never thought of doing that though and just switch it off at the mains.

JLPedro
8th November 2007, 21:25
Yes it is a switch ( a temporary one...), i have plans for making it better.
The extra black and red is for linking a bulb (a car light 21w, and put it inside the PSU) for indentify the Power On.

Great mod to the A600. Makes me want to do that to my A600 now.

There is one mod still left for your little Amiga, but with the extras already in the case it might not fit. The A600 68030 accelerator, which also adds more fast ram.

Would then basically end up with an A3000 spec mini Amiga, but with 3.1 KS.

@Zetr0

So what is that mod exactly? Looks like a lot of extras in the case, but I don't quite understand what all the additional buttons and switches on the case are for, or the extra outputs.

And is that little LCD screen displaying the whole Amiga display? If so that is really cool.

Buleste
24th January 2008, 14:36
Just studied the images and the LCD is the Amiga display, there are several sound jacks added to the back and what looks like a 3.5" male ide connector with power connector on the left hand side. I'd love to know what the silver thing is though.

Harrison

The silver thing attached under the top of the case? To me it looks like a remote control.

That looks like a great mod inside but the outside is not to my taste either just stopped short of view meters like old 70's hifi's!

anyway back to questions from Harrison & Zetro.

As i told Harrison last night on pager messager when i first got my Amiga 1200 i didn't even know it had a scan doubler inside i knew it had some kind of VGA adaptor but that was as much as i knew (i had assumed it cost something like £15 cause i had no idea what a scan doubler was back then!)

see the whole disccusion here starting from post 7/15 & more

and see attached images.

Ah the good old DCE internal scandoubler. Saw one on the net the other day. Pricy bit of kit nowadays. Wish i had one.

There's nothing wrong with being a post whore. Just don't expect to be paid.

Can the A600 support 16MB fast ram? I thought ECS machines could only accept 9MB (total system ram 11MB). Or is that something that the A630 adds (the ability for more)?

Also any ideas how the LCD is hooked up?

I've edited the post so that it contains a link to the site as i couldn't get the images to upload.
Or for larger pictures try http://www.planetneon.hu/pic/A600_extreme_lcd.jpg
and http://www.planetneon.hu/pic/A600_extreme_inside.jpg. Unfortunatly as my hungarian or polish is rusty to say the least i don't know any more about the project.

This is what happens when you lock the A-Team in a computer warehouse.

Here's a picture of my Amiga 1200 in all its glory! Finally I've managed to take a picture of my desktop. :)

http://forum.classicamiga.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=18&pictureid=86

The specifications are as follows:

ESCOM Amiga 1200
IndivisionAGA (hooked up to the LCD-screen)
Apollo 68030-40mHz with 16MB Fast-RAM
40GB 2.5 IDE HD
Mikromys Mouse Adapter (optical mouse connected)
Easynet Wireless PCMCIA (ADSL)

My Amiga is running MagicWB in 16 colours with MagicCopper installed. The resolution is 640 x 512, which is flickerfree thanks to the IndivisionAGA.

Hope you like it!

Amiga rulez!

Looks great PG.

Really wish I could have one of my Amiga's hooked up all of the time, but I don't have the room (with so many PCs and other stuff already setup).

At the moment my main A1200 is on the coffee table connected up to the TV via scart. Works well for what I need at the moment. :)

Yeah it's rustic for sure, rebuilt the garage last year and haven't decorated upstairs just yet. Eventually that'll be my living room!

My A600 ; A1200 ; and A1200 tower
I have to buy now a nive tv set!! this one is to old and small.

I can't believe you guys who have Amigas but don't actually use them! Maybe I would be the same, but I am suffering from some serious nostalgia here, at the minute. If I recall correctly, we had an A600 with an external disc drive so you could put in two discs at the same time - does that sound about right? Also a joystick, so that you could get really well mashed into the wall playing Lotus or run full pelt into the bombs on the various shoot-em-ups.......

Hi there Jag,

I'm still using the Amiga several times a week. Even got a new table for it not long ago. :) Here's a picture of my current setup:

http://oldschoolgameblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/amigaroom1.jpg (http://oldschoolgameblog.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/the-hunt-for-the-crt-part-three/)

Here's the specifications:

Escom Amiga 1200
Apollo 68030/40MHz with 32MB of RAM
Toshiba 40GB 2.5" HD
PCMCIA CF-adapter
Micromys Mouse Adapter
Competition Pro Joystick
Old-school Goldstar 14" colour-TV

On top of the machine, you can see a PCMCIA W-LAN card, which makes it possible to surf the Internet on the Amiga. Great for FTP's, Aminet and simple errands.

Harrison will probably comment on how tidy the desk is.. well it actually is. :) The Amiga zone is sacred and littering is not looked kindly upon.

An Amiga 600 with an external disk drive sound right. :) Was great being able to have two disks inserted when playing games, as one didn't have to swap disks as often. A lot of new hardware for the Amiga 600 has been released recently by the way.. we're talking turbo-cards (better CPU, more mem), scandoubler/flickerfixer and so on.

Me not jealous much, of course (hem, hem). Yes, very impressed with the neatness of your work area. Do the dreaded Guru Meditations still occur? Used to have that with games not loading or crashing horribly halfway through some really tense bit. It would tell you to click the left mouse button, but sometimes you would get a repeat offender and just have to leave it for a while (a bit like having a row with the other half and having to go off for a walk to calm down for a short time.....)

;-)

Harrison
10th October 2011, 20:49
Oh yes, still the old Guru messages. All great fun.

But, these days you can install pretty much all Amiga games onto an internal HDD using a clever program called WHDLoad, and that removed such issues most of the time, plus games load near instantly with no floppy disks needed.

WHDLoad rulez! Not having to rely on floppies for gaming on the Amiga is a blessing. :)

Harrison
11th October 2011, 13:26
I think if there ever was an award for the greatest invention/development in the Amiga world in recent years it would have to go to WHDLoad. It breathed new life into Amigas for me. As you say no need for floppies, so an A1200 can become a standalone retro gaming system with everything to hand and ready to run. No media needed.

You've seriously got me started now. I've downloaded WINUAE - will let you know how I get on idc. Looks a bit scarey, so will probably need some help. Other than the psychiatric, of course, which I'm not disputing (but then a youth misspent messing around with Amigas, motorbikes and keyboards which required 'system exclusive dumps' - I kid you not - will do that to you.)

I know lol, the stack on the left side are all brand new blank ds/dd disk's that I bought for £40. The rest are all backup games and software.
